Course Objectives
  1. The student will be able to demonstrate understanding of the human body’s anatomy and physiology through a brief written description of the major body systems and body functions.
  2. The student will be able to demonstrate understanding of physiological adaptation to a major functional health issue through a major paper and a brief written critique of one peer-reviewed journal article.

Course Outline

Module 1 - Basic gross anatomy, basic chemistry and cell function (part 1)

  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 2 - Cell function (part 2), tissue anatomy and function, skin anatomy and function

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 4, 5, 6, 7 (text pages 48 – 105).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 3 - Skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 8, 9, 10 (text pages 106 – 185).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 4 - Nervous system (continued), sensory and endocrine systems

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 11, 12, 13, 14 (text pages 186 – 261).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
  3. Request for topic approval for major paper due with this module.
Module 5 - Circulatory system

  1. Required readings: Chapters 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 (text pages 263 – 344).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 6 - Lymph, immune and respiratory system

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 20, 21, 22 (text pages 345 – 394).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 7 - Digestive, urinary systems, fluid and electrolyte balance in the body

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 23, 24, 25 (text pages 395 – 454).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
Module 8 - Reproductive system, human development, genetics

Assignments
  1. Required readings: Chapters 26, 27 (text pages 455 – 495).
  2. 250 - 400 word written summary of readings and lecture, emphasizing what you learned.
  3. Major paper due with this module.
  4. Brief critique paper due with this module.
Major Paper:
  1. 1500 - 2000 words on a functional health problem.
  2. Request topic or disease process for approval before or during Module 4. Hint-check out the as you age section of each chapter for ideas of topics.
  3. Include descriptions of: etiology, prevalence/incidence, definition (including the body’s physiological adaptation), medical diagnostics, and treatment options (with one treatment reference being the article used for the journal article critique paper – see below).
  4. Utilize APA format in title page, content, and reference page.
  5. This is a formal paper; therefore, it is to be written in the third person.
  6. Adhere to word number limit.
  7. Submit the paper via email as a MS Word attachment during Module 8.
Brief Journal Article Critique Paper:
  1. 200 - 300 word paper that analyzes an article on the treatment of the functional health problem chosen for your major paper.
  2. Analyze the study question or problem, research process/methodology, conclusions, and why this is significant for the chosen functional health problem along with any other significant information provided by the article or study.
  3. Article must be from a peer-reviewed journal.
  4. Article should also be utilized as a reference for your major paper and noted in the ‘treatment options’ section of the major paper.
  5. Utilize APA format in title page, content, and reference page.
  6. This is a formal paper; therefore, it is to be written in the third person.
  7. Adhere to word number limit.
  8. Submit the paper via email as a MS Word attachment during Module 8.
