About the Instructor:

Currently, medical case manager for Zurich American Insurance. Other positions have included staff nurse at several NYC hospitals, utilization review, hospital bill auditing, and staff development for case management organizations. I have a BSN from Skidmore College and an MSN from the University of Phoenix. My present position requires working closely with injured workers and their families throughout rehabilitation and recovery with assistance in job accommodation.

Technology Issues:

Assignments are to be submitted via e-mail or fax. If e-mail is selected, assignments should be sent as an attachment in MS Word format. If you use another word processing program, please use the "Save As" option to save the document in MS Word format. If for some reason you cannot save as a Word document, you may save it as "Rich Text Format" (RTF). If fax is chosen, include a cover sheet with your name, # of pages, assignment week #, and instructions for returning your assignment.

Attendance Requirements:

The student is expected to submit a minimum of one assignment each week. Assignments are due by 11pm EST on the Sunday following your start date.

Written Assignments:

All written assignments will be expected to follow APA format. A cover page should include a title, your name and e-mail address, course name, instructor name, date, and week #. All margins are 1", Times New Roman 12-point font. All borrowed work must include appropriate citations and reference. Refer to the APA manual for proper format.

You are encouraged to use the Internet for research or other professional/academic sources of information to supplement your assignments. The textbook provides an excellent reference and web site list. Be sure to credit all material.

Course Objectives: At the end of this course the student should be able to:
  1. Define family nursing.
  2. Describe selected theories of family nursing.
  3. Select appropriate research methods used to identify family theory.
  4. Describe family structure, function, and process.
  5. Explain the socio-cultural influences on family health.
  6. Examine the relationship between family systems and the health of individual family members.
  7. Use the nursing process to describe and define family health problems.
  8. Describe nursing activities relevant to family health promotion.
  9. Describe and examine the practice of family nursing in one of six major clinical areas.
  10. Describe how public policy affects families and family health.
ASSIGNMENTS

WEEK ONE
  1. Reading: Chapter 1 - Hanson text
  2. Review: APA Manual section on citing sources and reference format
  3. Written:
  1. Submit a brief biography including your background, education, job experience, and professional interests (1/2 page)
  2. Select 3 family nursing roles from pps. 12-15 in your text and describe how these roles fit into your specific nursing practice. Provide examples (300-500 words).
WEEK TWO
  1. Reading: Chapters 2 & 3 - Hanson text
  2. Written:
  1. Answer question # 4 on p. 56 (500-750 words)
  2. Answer question # 11 on p. 75 (500-750 words)
WEEK THREE
  1. Read: Chapters 4 & 5 - Hanson text
  2. Written:
  1. Answer discussion questions 1-10 based on the Blanchard Family Case Study found on p. 95 (500-750 words).
  2. Answer discussion questions 1-4 based on the Lindero Family Case Study found on p. 117 (500-750 words).
WEEK FOUR
  1. Read: Chapters 7 & 8 - Hanson text
  2. Written: Choose ONE of the case studies found on page 239, 266, 340, or 359 and develop a care plan for the selected family using the family nursing process. Include an analysis, nursing diagnoses, plan, and potential interventions. (3-5 pages).
WEEK FIVE
  1. Read: Chapter 9 - Hanson text
  2. Written: Select a family from your work setting or community and prepare a family health promotion plan using the nursing process. You may want to research local resources to use in your plan. (3-5 pages).
WEEK SIX
  1. Read: Chapter 16 - Hanson text
  2. Research: Select one of the social/political policy topics of interest to you, discussed in Chapter 16, and research articles and relevant information pertaining to the topic. For example: Health care access, Welfare, Environmental Disparities.
  3. Written: Write a paper describing the topic you selected, its effect on family health, and how nurses can influence change (3-4 pages)
WEEK SEVEN
  1. Read: Select a clinical practice area of interest to you and read the corresponding chapter in the Hanson text - Chapter 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, or 15. This will be in preparation for the final assignment that is due in Week 8
  2. Research additional material relevant to family nursing and your chosen practice area to assist in writing the paper due in Week 8.
  3. Written: Identify 2-3 resources in your community that serve families. Provide a brief description of the service provided, the purpose, and how this service might assist you in family nursing practice (1-2 pages).
WEEK EIGHT
  1. Written: Based on the clinical practice area you have chosen submit a 6-8 page paper describing and examining the practice of family health care nursing in your chosen practice area. Explain why a family nursing approach is different (more useful?) than an individual approach. Include:
    Introduction
    Theoretical perspectives
    Nursing assessment areas
    Nursing interventions
    Any potential social or political policies and implications
