Introductory financial and managerial accounting courses are suggested prerequisites. An introductory course in data processing that covers a computer language or a software package is helpful.


COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course, BU323, provides the theory and application of accounting information systems. The course will reflect how information technology (IT) is altering the nature of accounting. Specifically, how such developments as the Internet, electronic commerce, EDI, databases, and artificial intelligence are fundamentally transforming the way organizations conduct their business activities. In addition, it will be explained how these IT developments are changing the way that businesses account for the results of those activities.

  1. Homework Assignment will consist of assignments for each chapter. All assignments are due to the instructor by the learner prior to the next scheduled session. Assignments may be faxed or e-mailed to the instructor.
  2. Mid-Term Exam will consist of multiple-choice, discussion questions and problems taken from assignments.
  3. Final Exam will cover most recent material since Mid-Term and will consists of multiple-choice, discussion questions and problems taken from assignments.
  4. Project complete one of the following options for your final project or paper.
Option A: (complete all three parts):
  1. A brief written description that summarizes the knowledge presented in this course (Maximum 6 - 8 pages)
  2. A brief statement of your position that demonstrates a critical analysis of important concepts and theories of this course (Maximum 6 - 8 pages).
  3. A critical review that demonstrates a synthesis of ideas related to the course content (Maximum 6 – 8 pages). (Minimum 18 - 24 pages double spaced. In addition there must be a title page, table of contents, abstract, reference page and please proofread for grammatical errors.)
Option B:
  1. A major position paper identifying and analyzing the main concepts, ideas, and/or strategies as specified in the course objectives of the course. This paper must demonstrate your analysis of the literature for and against your position, your ability to analyze the appropriateness of the selected literature, and your ability to relate your position to your profession. (Minimum 18 - 24 pages double spaced. In addition there must be a title page, table of contents, abstract, reference page and please proofread for grammatical errors.)
Option C:
  1. Case 7.3 Electronic Commerce Opportunities
    Research the use of electronic commerce in different industries. Write a report describing the extent to which electronic commerce is utilized in at least four different industries. Discuss the industry characteristics, such as nature of products or services being sold, that appear to encourage or discourage the use of electronic commerce. (Minimum 18 - 24 pages double spaced. In addition there must be a title page, table of contents, abstract, reference page and please proofread for grammatical errors.)
*Note: Abstract page should be no more than 120 words, it is a snapshot of your paper.
  1. Technical Requirements: Browser Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or higher. Operating System: Windows 95/98 or some compatible system.
  2. Communication: The learner is required to submit an e-mail address to the instructor to be used during the extent of the course. I check e-mail daily. I will respond within 24 hours by e-mail.
The learner is expected to do additional research beyond the scope of this course to complete any assignments by use of the Internet or other available resources.

METHOD of INSTRUCTION:

BU323 is a distance learning course offered through Canyon College. Since this class is basically a self-paced program in that you may complete a weeks worth of work at anytime during that week time-frame, it is essential that the leaner review all available materials located in the text, classroom, syllabus, e-mail, etc. Course examinations will be administered during the fifth and ninth weeks of class. They can be faxed or e-mailed to instructor. The mid-term and final are due one week after administration. Prior to turning in the first assignment each learner is required to submit via e-mail to the instructor the following information:

Name, e-mail address, course expectations, professional work experience, educational background and anything else you would like the instructor to know about you.
