PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:

The primary purpose of this course is to expose students to the many ethical issues that pervade today’s business environment. The course also introduces students to ethics from a broader perspective. Finally, the course requires that students focus on improving themselves and/or improving their manner of living.

REQUIREMENTS: - Online Book Store

I. Text reading and essay exams

All students obtain the text for the course, read the text, and complete 19 open-book essay exams for 19 units. The text is Business & Society, Ethics and Stakeholder Management, 5th Edition, by Archie B. Carroll and Ann K. Buchholtz. The text is published by Thomson South-Western. The ISBN is 0-324-11495-8.

Each of the 19 open-book essay exams pertains to one of the 19 chapters in the text. The unit/chapter topics are as follows

II. Ethics assignments

Students choose two of the following ethics assignments.

1. Audio course The Quest for Meaning: Value, Ethics, and the Modern Experience, by Professor Robert H. Kane. The course is available from the Teaching Company at www.teachco.com or 1-800-832-2412. The course is no. 456. Students listen to each of the 24 lectures in the audio course and answer one of the “questions to consider” for each lecture (students pick which question they wish to answer).

This assignment counts as two choices (fully satisfies the ethics assignments requirement).

2. Audio course The Ethics of Aristotle, by Professor Joseph Koterski. The course is available from the Teaching Company at www.teachco.com or 1-800-832-2412. The course is no. 408. Students listen to each of the 12 lectures in the audio course and answer one of the “questions to consider” for each lecture (students pick which question they wish to answer.

3. Everyday Ethics, by Joshua Halberstam, ISBN 0-14-016558-4. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

4. Ethics for the New Millennium , by His Holiness The Dalai Lama, ISBN 1-57322-025-6. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

5. Affluenza, The All-Consuming EpidemicEpidemic, by John de Graaf, David Wann and Thomas H. Naylor, ISBN 1-57675-199-6. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

III. Self-improvement assignment

Students choose one of the following self-improvement assignments.

4. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, by Stephen R. Covey, ISBN 0-671-70863-5. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

5. Change Your Attitude, by Tom Bay and David Macpherson, ISBN 1-56414-378-3. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

6. Say Please, Say Thank You, the Respect We Owe One Another, ISBN 0-399-52538-6. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.

7. Time Management from the Inside Out, by Julie Morgenstern, ISBN 0-8050-6469-9. Students read the book and write an essay explaining what they learned from the book and how they plan to apply this knowledge.
