COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Management uses a mixture of textbook assignments, cases, and Internet research to highlight the key issues faced by managers in their approach to Human Resource Management. The productivity of every organization depends on people. This course focuses in those individuals that make up every organization. A developmental approach is used in combining theory, research, and applications for improving interpersonal effectiveness in organizations. The emphasis of this course is on the knowledge and skills needed for individuals to perform effectively in organizations, including the ability to communicate, to cope with conflict and frustration, to motivate others, to use authority, and to increase group productivity.

The time frame for this course is eight (8) weeks.

• Write a 2 to 3 page, double spaced paper on the Human Resource/Personnel department in your organization. Discuss the strengths/weaknesses

Week Two

• Read Chapters 4, 5, 6
• Do Two Points of View-“Procrastination” 2/3 page summation
• Question 1, 3, 8 page 86
• Questions 10, 12, page 148

Week Three

• Read Chapters 7, 8, 9
• Week 3 Questions 1, 3, 5 page 206

Week Four

• Read Chapters 10, 11, 12
• Questions 1, 3, 4 page 297
• Submit Midterm

Week Five

• Read Chapters 13,14 7/26/02

Week Eight

TERM PAPER

• In 8 to 10 pages, APA style, double spaced, using all of the information learned from this course, revisit your Human Resources department or organizational structure in your workplace and prepare a blueprint that will give an overall picture of the health of the current system in place, along with point out possible problematic areas. Take all of the information that you have learned from this course and develop a plan that, when completed, should be of the caliber that it could be presented to your Human Resources Manager consideration. Due to the complexity of this paper, and all that is involved, this should be started no later than the second week of class.

At the undergraduate level, students are expected to have an advanced writing style, Therefore, all written assignments must be typed on a computer in an organized format of your choice as long as it is appropriate for the information being presented. Because effective communication is a primary element of success in today's competitive business environment, spelling, grammar and punctuation will be strictly enforced and graded as part of the assignment. Exceptions will not be made.

The length of your writings is up to you as long as content is not sacrificed. Please stay within the maximum guidelines I have listed.

Plagiarism is unquestionably the worst academic violation a student can commit. If you are caught utilizing material without proper reference or citation, you will receive an automatic failing grade for this course. All references must be cited as a footnote or endnote utilizing any acceptable style of your choice. If you have any questions in this area, please contact me.

All assignments must be turned in on time to receive full credit. Please make prior arrangements for unusual circumstances.
