GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide participants with the professional competencies required for successful performance in the human resource field. Detailed exercises with learning objectives and procedures guide the student through the process of solving complex personnel problems.

CONCEPT:

The course will be over a seven week period, utilizing the text, case studies and interactive conversations.

WEEK 1: (INTRODUCTION)

Chapter 1 - HRM: An Overview: We will discuss the basic human resource management functions.

WEEK 2: (THE ENVIRONMENT AND LEGAL ASPECTS OF HRM)

Chapter 2 – The Environment of Human Resource Management: We will discuss the dynamics of the human resource management environment..

Chapter 3 – Equal Employment Opportunity and Affirmative Action: There will be an overview of the major EEO legislation that impacts human resource management.

WEEK 3: (STAFFING)

Chapter 4 – Job Analysis and Human Resource Planning: We will discuss why job analysis is a basic human resource management tool and explaining the reasons for conducting job analysis.

Chapter 5 – Recruitment: We will discuss alternatives to recruitment and the external and internal environments of recruitment.

Chapter 6 – Internet Recruiting: In this chapter we will describe Internet trends and the Internet recruitment process.

Chapter 7 – Selection: We will discuss the significance of employee selection and the environmental factors that affect it.

TEST 1 – Covering Weeks 1-3

WEEK 4: (HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT)

Chapter 8 – Training and Development: This chapter will be devoted to explaining the scope of training and development and its relationships to organizational change.

Chapter 9 – Career Planning and Development: We will discuss the concept of career planning and development.

Chapter 10 – Performance Appraisal: We will define performance appraisal and identify its uses; afterwards, we will explain the environmental factors affecting performance appraisal and its process.

WEEK 5: (COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS)

Chapter 11 – Compensation: We will begin the chapter with an overview of compensation and finally provide an explanation of compensation equity.

Chapter 12 – Benefits and Other Compensation Issues: We will discuss benefits, both mandated and voluntary. We will then discuss legislation related to benefits and the proper communication of information about benefits packages.

WEEK 6: (SAFETY AND HEALTH)

Chapter 13 – A Safe and Healthy Work Environment: We will describe the nature and role of safety and healthy and provide an overview of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

TEST 2 – (Covering Weeks 4-6)

WEEK 7: (EMPLOYEE AND LABOR RELATIONS)

Chapter 14 – The Evolution of Labor Unions: In this chapter we will discuss the history of the labor movement in the United States. We will then describe unions in today’s environment.

Chapter 15 – Labor-Management Relations: We will devote this chapter to labor-management relations involving both individual and collective bargaining.

Chapter 16 - Internal Employee Relations: We will describe the internal employee relations. We will then discuss discipline and disciplinary action.

FINAL – (Course Comprehensive)

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
  1. There will be two tests and a comprehensive final covering the text, class lectures and discussions. The tests will be comprised of true/false and multiple-choice questions.
  2. You will be required to complete a term paper of between 7 and 10 pages. The term paper will relate to a current human resource management topic. The paper will be typed and double-spaced. Proper footnotes and references must be annotated. The paper will count as 15 percent of your grade. However, you will not receive a passing grade in the course without successfully completing this project. The term paper is due two weeks prior to the end of the course. I will work with you individually on your topic and in-progress reviews.
LECTURES:

I will post a lecture each week and sometimes throughout the week. It is during my lectures that I will give you your reading assignments, test preparations and weekly instructions.

You will be notified how and where to login for your course materials and participation, via email.

PARTICIPATION:

This is self-paced online Internet class. The online week will begin on Monday and end on Saturday. Please keep in mind this is an Internet class, therefore, I expect all work to completed online, unless you have coordinated faxing, mailing, etc. However, when using any mode other than Internet, you will be responsible for ensuring I have received all information no later than the required date.

LATE ASSIGNMENTS:

Assignments are due at midnight YOUR time zone. I will verify time zones the first week of class. I reserve the right to deduct up to five points for each day an assignment is late. If you have not made proper coordination, I will consider the assignment late and will deduct accordingly.
