I. Course Description: Ethics-Insurance
The basis of insurance is trust: trust between agents and customers, agents and insurers, insurers and reinsurers, and trust of society in general that the insurance industry can stabilize risk. The foundation of trust in insurance is the sense of fair dealing and moral conduct among participants. Ethics is the word used to embody this sense of fair, equal, and consistent application of the principles of indemnity.
II. Course Objective

Weekly assignments = 50%
Research paper on a topic supplied by the instructor = 50%
A = 100 - 90%
B = 89 - 80%
C = 79 - 70%

Assignments must be completed on a weekly basis. Please submit weekly assignments via email by Sunday evening of each week. Late assignments will affect your grade.
The course study should take 7 weeks to complete, but must be completed within 14 weeks of an agreed starting date.
The instructor may be contacted by e-mail with any questions or concerns. If person to person conversation is necessary, the student should e-mail the instructor with a time and phone number where the student can be reached.
Academic honesty is highly valued at Canyon College. A student must present the product of his or her own original work.
V. Weekly Course Outline and Assignments
Weekly assignments will be given to the student prior to starting the course. Most assignments will consist of short answer questions which will relate to the text, personal experience, and timely issues. The chapter coverage timing is listed below. This is the optimal course time frame that works well to keep the student motivated toward completion. However, I do realize that you have chosen Canyon College because you have active professional and social lives outside of school. Exceptions to the optimal time frame must be discussed with the instructor and will be considered on a case by case basis.
The answers to the assignments should be of sufficient length and content to clearly demonstrate your understanding of the subject. Please try to answer the review questions without referring to the answers in the back of the text.
Week 1
Week 2
- Read Chapter 1 pages 1.1 - 1.11 and Chapter 6 pages 6.1 - 6.3.
- Read Canon 1 pages 2.1 - 2.7 and pages 3.1 - 3.2.
- Answer review questions 1, 2, & 3 on page 2.7.
- Read the case studies and opinions listed on page 2.7 (The case studies can be found in Sec. 5 of the book.). Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.7 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
Week 3
- Read Canon 2 pages 2.8 - 2.16 and pages 3.3 - 3.6.
- Answer review questions 1, 2, 3, & 4 on page 2.17.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.16. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.16 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
- Read Canon 3 pages 2.18 – 2.25 and 3.7 - 3.8.
- Answer review questions 1, 2, & 3 on page 2.26.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.25. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.25 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
Week 4
- Read Canon 4 pages 2.27 - 2.35 and pages 3.9 – 3.11.
- Answer the review question on page 2.35.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.35. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.35 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
- Read Canon 5 pages 2.36 – 2.40 and 3.12 - 3.13.
- Answer the review question on page 2.40.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.40. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.40 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
Week 5
- Read Canon 6 pages 2.41 - 2.46 and pages 3.14 - 3.15.
- Answer review questions 1, 2, & 3 on page 2.46 - 2.47.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.46. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.46 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
- Read Canon 7 pages 2.48 – 2.52 and 3.16 - 3.17.
- Answer review questions 1 & 2 on page 2.52.
- Read all of the case studies listed on page 2.52. Comment on any 2 of the case studies listed on page 2.52 as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
Week 6
- Read Canon 8 pages 2.53- 2.59 and pages 3.18 - 3.20.
- Answer review questions 1, 2, 3, & 4 on page 2.60.
- Read case study HCS 120. Comment as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows this study.
- Read Canon 9 pages 2.61 – 2.65 and 3.21.
- Answer review questions 1 & 2 on page 2.66.
- Read the two case studies listed on page 2.66. Comment on both of these case studies as to your agreement or disagreement with the opinion that follows each study.
Week 7
- Read Chapter 4; Disciplinary Rules, Procedures, and Penalties for the Enforcement of the Code of Professional Ethics.
- Begin working on a five page typed (double spaced) research paper. The subject will be provided by the instructor.
