Course Objectives:
This course will bring together the information you have learned from the other insurance and risk management
courses in this bachelor program. The student will use various risk management and insurance concepts learned in
the previous courses to act as the risk manager for the case study.
This course should not be taken until all of the Insurance Concentration courses have been successfully completed.
Required Textbook:
There are no textbooks required for this course. However, textbooks from previous courses will be of great benefit.
Course Overview:
At the beginning of the course, the student will be given the details and information about a risk that will be studied
for the entire length of the course. Information will include commercial property and liability exposures; personal
property and liability exposures; and employee benefits and life insurance details.
For the mid-term grade, the student will be tested on the identification and analysis of the various loss exposures
present to the risk. The student will be tested on those insurance concentration courses they have successfully
completed prior to taking this course. The mid-term should be completed within four weeks of starting the course.
For the final exam, the student will be tested on the various insurance and non-insurance techniques that he/she
recommends addressing all of the loss exposures of the risk. The student should consider him/herself as the Risk
Manager and make insurance and non-insurance suggestions to deal with the exposures presented in the case.
The final exam should be completed within eight weeks of starting this course.
The entire course is subjective and submitted in essay form. The student is encouraged to communicate with the
instructor for additional information to make sure he/she clearly understands the information presented in the
case.
The instructor will be available via e-mail. If a person-to-person conversation is necessary, the student should e-mail
the instructor with a time and phone number where the student can be reached.
Grading:
50% of the student’s grade will come from the mid-term exam and 50% from the final exam. The student will not
be given a series of questions to review and answer. The assignment for the mid-term examination is to identify and
discuss as many exposures the student can support. The student will be graded on the accurateness of the
exposures identified and the discussion supporting his/her choices.
The grading for the final examination will be based on the recommendations made by the student citing insurance
and non-insurance techniques to handle all of the exposures he/she previously identified. Since there may be more
than one way to address a particular exposure, the student should state his/her recommendation for dealing with
the exposure and present supporting arguments.
