Course Mission:
Introduce beginning economics students to principles essential to understanding the basic economizing problem, specific economic issues, and the policy alternatives available for dealing with them.


Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
  1. Comprehend the six core principles of economics:
    a. Economics and the economy
    b. Demand, Supply and Elasticity (Product Markets)
    c. Wages, Rents, Profit and Interest (Resource Markets)
    d. Microeconomics of Governments
    e. Microeconomics and Policies (antitrust, health care, labor and agriculture)
    f. International economics (exchange rates, deficits and transition economies)
  2. Using the power of economics be able to apply and use the tools to analyze a wide variety of issues and problems.
  3. Develop framework for students to conduct economic experiments and to engage in role-playing as consumers, producers, citizens, and policy makers.
  4. Comprehend and Distinguish between Pure and Monopolistic competition.

Policies and Procedures:
This is a 8 week course.
  1. Weekly classes run from Sunday to Sunday and students must complete all assigned readings and assignments for turn in the following Sunday. Example: Week #1 Assignments are due the beginning of Week #2 (Sunday)
  2. Students will be required to email assignments listed in the syllabus in a word document or email to the instructor. YOU MUST HAVE YOUR NAME ON YOUR PAPER. PAPER'S WITHOUT NAMES AUTOMATICALLY GET A ZERO!
  3. Assignments more than 2 days overdue will not be accepted and graded as a zero.
  4. There will be two exams Mid Term Week #4 and Final Week #8 (multiple choice). The instructor will provide the class with Exam Preparation Review for each exam.
  5. INTEGRITY: The college code of academic integrity will be rigorously enforced. Cheating of any type, including submitting another's work as your own will result in immediate with-drawl from the course.

Assessment / Evaluation:

Student participation will be evaluated using one or a combination of the following assessment techniques:
  1. Student will demonstrate a comprehension level of basic economic vocabulary by completing assignments.
  2. Exams: Will be taken electronically via the Canyon College Electronic Test Board. You must provide me with your student # and your password so I can give you access to the exam.
