COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A study of management's use of accounting information to make decisions related to planning, controlling, and evaluating the organization's operations. Using electronic spreadsheets, the budgeting function and use of performance reports is demonstrated. The behavior and management of costs, as well as techniques used to evaluate and control results of operations, are discussed. Topics include: cost-volume-profit analysis, activity based costing in production and service companies, decentralized operations, and differential analysis techniques. Through the use of case studies, current readings, and course projects, emphasis is placed on the business environment and related industries.

CLASS POLICY:

Because this is a self pace type participate course, it is essential that the student read the lecture material located in the classroom, prepare and return all assigned material via email or fax.

You and your fellow students have demanding schedules. You have made a commitment to yourself and, your families to attend, participate meaningfully, and contribute to the course. Accordingly, in the interest of fairness, lack of preparation, failure to return assignments or late assignment will be penalized 10 percent.

1. Homework Assignments will consist of assignments for each chapter. All assignments will be returned to the instructor by the student, prior to proceeding to the next scheduled session. Assignments may be faxed or e-mailed to the instructor.

2. Mid-Term Exam will consist of multiple-choice, brief essays, and short exercises taken from assignments.

3. Final Exam will cover most recent material since Mid-Term exam and will consist of multiple choice, brief essay, and short exercises taken from assignments.

4. Project #1: Each student will be given a project to complete from the text book. Project #1 is 10 % of the students grade and will not include Project # 2.

5. Project #2: Each student will be required to complete a comprehensive financial review of a public company. The student will select a public manufacturing company in the business environment or related industry. The company must be pre-approved by the instructor prior to the student conducting the financial review. The student will discuss relate Make-or Buy decisions and Activity Based Costing to the financial review and explain in some detail what options company should consider. Whether those options should be to abandon the project or pursue other avenues to achieve cost objectives. The project will be no less than 5 typed pages in length (excluding the title page and supplemental information). The topic must be of graduate school caliber and include clear analysis supported by quantitative and qualitative measures. The project will be evaluated on application accuracy in calculations, content, understanding, and creativity. This project is 20 % of the students final grade for the course. The student must submit the project using windows 95/98 (word) to the instructor by means of email, fax, or postal mail on 3.5 disk. The student may begin the project at anytime during the course and must be submitted prior to taking the final exam.

6. Technical Requirements: Browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or higher. Operating System: Windows 95/98 or some compatible system.

7. Communication: Initial Administrative Task: The student is required to submit an e-mail address to the instructor to be used during the extent of the course. I will check e-mail Daily, to include Saturday and Sunday of each course week. I will respond to e-mail within 24 hours either by e-mail or telephone. A 1-800-telephone number is supplied so that students may contact me in the event of an emergency or for course work discussion.

The scheduled outline and text book are, by themselves, not enough material to cover every aspect of business and related industries in today's every changing environment.
