Course Overview:

This course examines how management functions and processes apply to work in organizations and with individuals in those organizations, introducing key management thinkers and schools of thought. Students will examine what management professionals as well as theorists and social scientists have to say about motivation, leadership, organization, and planning. Students will also look at business challenges from the perspectives of contemporary leadership theory and business ethics.

Course Outcomes:

By the end of this course students should be able to:
  1. Describe and define the subsets of management—i.e., human resource management, management information systems, and operations management
  2. Recognize ethical dilemmas and use an ethical theory to justify a particular action
  3. Apply motivational, ethical, management, and leadership theories to situations in organizational settings
  4. Recognize and employ appropriate management terminology

Your grade in this course will be based on the following:

Case Studies 40% (5 points x 8)
Midterm exam 30%
Final exam 30%

Weekly Schedule

Week 1

Reading Assignment:

(1) Introduction . Read the chapter.
(2) Chapter 1: Developing Self-Awareness. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a one-page report describing your personal management style.

Week 2

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 2: Managing Stress. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a two-page report based on the Case of the Missing Time.

Week 3

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 3: Solving Problems Creatively. Read the chapter and e-mail to the professor a two-page report on The Sony Walkman case. (NB each report will include positive and negative critique comments about the case and will make proposals for its solution).

Week 4

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 4: Communicating Supportively. Read the chapter and e-mail to the professor a two-page report on the Find Somebody Else case.

E-mail the professor the Midterm exam: The midterm exam will be an essay based on chapters 1-4. Contact your professor to discuss the topic.

Week 5

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 5: Gaining Power and Influence. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a a six-page report on the three John DeLorean cases (two pages per case but placed together as one assignment).

Week 6

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 6: Motivating Others. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a two-page report on the Activities for Motivating Others case.

Week 7

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 7: Managing Conflict. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a two-page report on the Activities for Managing Conflict case.

Week 8

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 8: Empowering and Delegating. Read the chapter and e-mail the professor a two-page report on the Executive Development Associates case.

Week 9

Reading Assignment:

(1) Chapter 9: Building Effective Teams. Read the chapter, review the course, and e-mail the professor a two-page report indicating the benefits you have derived from the course.

E-mail the professor the final exam: The final exam will be based on chapters 5-9 and will be an essay. Contact the professor to discuss the topic.
