Course Purpose:

The purpose of this course is to provide a basis for understanding the global business environment and how to plan and implement a complete and effective Global Strategy for any company. Unlike other graduate level strategy classes that have only one chapter on Global Strategy, this class is totally about Global Strategy.

The global business environment has increasingly influenced our professional, business and personal lives. This phenomenon has been "turbo-charged" since the mid-1990 due to the skyrocketing popularity of the Internet. It can make any company a global company instantaneously.

The key to staying current with today’s business environment is to understand domestic and global business practices and strategy. Successful completion of the course will give you that very useable ability in just eight weeks.

Course Scope:

This course encompasses the entire spectrum of Global Strategy, including theory and implementation planning. In addition, it includes special topics such as Intellectual Property Management, Knowledge Management, International Legal Issues, Global Supply Chain Management, International Finance, International Marketing, International Governance Issues, Global Strategic Alliances, and Global Informational Management. This is not an easy course; there are 25 Chapters and 585 pages to be covered in 8 weeks, in addition to a 15-20 page Global Strategy Final Project.

Final Project Assignment:

This Final Project Assignment will mostly follow the guide outlined in Chapter 11 of Total Global Strategy II. However, it must also include sections on the special topics presented in Thunderbird on Global Business Strategy; including but not exclusive to global information technology strategy, intellectual property strategy, legal issues review, global financial strategy, global currency strategy, training, global strategic alliances, cross-cultural strategy, etc. The project should be approximately 15 - 20 pages in length excluding references. It should be written in a professional manner, as it would be if it were presented to the Senior Management Staff or the Board of the company used in the project. It should be formatted as in Chapter 11, with special sections for the special topics in the body of the project paper or as an addendum. It is worth 500 of the 1000 points available in the class. The final project will be graded and returned within one week of submittal.

Weekly Written Assignments:

This is the other 500 of the 1000 points that is possible in the class. The 5 weeks of answers from the TGS chapters are worth 100 points each. They should be about 1-3 pages per chapter. The Introduction of who you are and what you do should be about half a page long and helps me understand your background as it relates to the class material. It is worth 0 points, however, I believe it is that important to the class’s success. The other weekly written assignments should be about 3 pages long, and will be incorporated into your final project assignment. Some sections maybe more than 3 pages long, depending on the topic.

If you desire it, I can e-mail you a list of web sites that may be helpful in researching and writing your Final Project Assignment. It can be a worthwhile research and learning tool.
