Course Description:

This course is a comprehensive examination into the various functions used by Human Resource Managers in effectively managing human resources. The course studies the interactions between managers, organizational staff, and/or specialists. This course will cover Human Resource Management as it relates to planning, compensation, career planning job analysis and design, recruitment, selection, performance evaluation, job safety, and labor relations.

Learning Objectives:

The student will:
  1. Describe the strategic importance of Human Resource Management (HRM) to the organizations and the role that managers/specialist perform in HRM activities.
  2. Describe how organizations enhance performance.
  3. Describe the employee hiring process.
  4. Discuss the role that culture plays in the effective use of HRM practices in a global organization.
  5. Explain the importance of training and development of employees.
  6. Explain the pay systems, benefits, and factors affecting worker compensation.
    Describe the various training methods used in organizations.
  7. Describe how labor/management relations affect the workplace.
  8. Define health, safety and security in relation to the workplace.

Assessment:
  1. Read 6 case study assignments covering different aspects of Human Resource Management within the business environment.
  1. Write a twelve page Reflective Paper on Human Resource Management using the APA style (5th Edition) on a topic relevant to accounting.
Academic Requirements:
  1. All students are expected to “attend” the course by completing all course assignments in an academic manner and with complete preparation.
  2. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall composition will be included in the grading of all assignments.
  3. Students are required to complete each unit within a one-week time frame. At the students request, and upon successful completion of a unit in less than one week, the instructor will provide students with subsequent units of homework in advance.
  4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Method Of Instruction:

BU620 – Human Resource Management is a distance-learning course offered through Canyon College. Because this class is a partially self-paced program in that you may complete a specific weeks work at anytime during that week timeframe, it is essential that the student review all available materials located in the text, classroom, e-mail, and syllabus. Course examinations will be administered on-line during the fourth and eighth weeks of class. Prior to the submission of the first assignment each student is required to submit via e-mail to the instructor the following information:
Name, e-mail address, course expectations, professional work experience, educational background and anything else you would like the instructor to know about you.
Course Schedule and Assignments:

Week 1:
Unit 1: Read an academic article or case on the job analysis and design as it relates to the Human Resource Manager. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 2:
Unit 2: Read an academic article or case on the recruitment and selection of employees. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 3:
Unit 3: Read an academic article or case on the career planning issues that may be handled by the Human Resource Manager. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 4:
Unit 4: Submit a detailed description of the Reflective/Term Paper you have chosen covering a topic in Human Resource Management, including the purpose of the study and the limitations of the study. This can be done in two to three pages. Wait for the professor’s comments.
Week 5:
Unit 5: Read an academic article or case on how the Human Resource Manager interacts with labor unions. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 6:
Unit 6: Read an article or case on what role the Human Resource Department plays in performance evaluations. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 7:
Unit 7: Read an article or case on the role the Human Resource Manager plays in compensation/benefits of employees. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 8 - Final Exam
Unit 8: Submit your twelve-page Reflective Paper to the instructor. Wait for the professor’s comments.
