COURSE SYLLABUS: Staffing Organizations

Course Description:

This purpose of this course is to introduce students to the theory, principles, and legal requirements for staffing the workplace. This course will introduce the student to staffing systems, predictors of performance, models for selecting employees and decisions and methods related to the employment process. Students will understand how the strategic management plan of the organization fits with staffing, planning, recruiting, and selection.

Learning Objectives:

The students will:
  1. Understand the concepts, theories, and methodologies used in staffing organizations.
  2. Become familiar with the various federal, state, and local laws that govern the employment and staffing processes.
  3. Employ a staffing model to ensure that decisions support the strategic plan to meet goals, objectives, and mission of the organization.
  4. Identify the ways that labor unions can affect the organization’s staffing process.
  5. Analyze and employ staffing models that support international staffing programs.
  6. Design and implement selection programs, which are ethical, legal, effective, and efficient that meets the needs of the labor market in the global economy.
  7. Conduct job analysis, job evaluations, and prepare job descriptions and work specifications.
  8. Understand the advantages and disadvantages of internal and external recruiting practices.
  9. Design, implement, and evaluate and organization staffing model that meets company/organization strategic plan.

The students are encouraged to become familiar with other sources, especially those located electronically. Assessment:
  1. Six reading and case study assignments covering important aspects in staffing organizations.
  2. A twelve-page Reflective Paper (APA Style, 5th Edition) on any topic covering the staffing of organizations.
Academic Requirements:

  1. All students are expected to “attend” the course by completing all course assignments in an academic manner and with complete preparation.
  2. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall composition will be included in the grading of all assignments.
  3. Students are required to complete each unit within a one-week time frame. At the student’s request, and upon successful completion of a unit in less than one week, the instructor will provide students with subsequent units of homework in advance.
  4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Method of Instruction

BUS-656 is a distance-learning course offered through Canyon College. Because this class is a partially self-paced program in that you may complete a specific weeks work at anytime during that week timeframe, it is essential that the student review all available materials located in the text, classroom, e-mail, and syllabus. Course examinations will be administered on-line during the fourth and eighth weeks of class. Prior to the submission of the first assignment each student is required to submit via e-mail to the instructor the following information.
Name, e-mail address, course expectations, professional work experience, educational background and anything else you would like the instructor to know about you.
Course Schedule and Assignments:

Week 1
Unit 1:Read your text and a journal article on the Legal Issues and Staffing Organizations. Cite appropriate references from your text and journal article in the summary paper. Submit a two-page summary paper to your instructor.
Week 2
Unit 2:Read an academic article on Job Analysis and Job Evaluation. Submit a two-page analysis of the materials read.
Week 3
Unit 3:Read your text and a journal article on the Developing of an HR Plan to Fit the Organization’s Strategic Plan. Cite appropriate references from your text and the journal article in the summary paper. Submit the summary paper to your instructor.
Week 4
Unit 4:Submit a detail description of the Term Paper/Reflective you have chosen, including the purpose of the study and the limitations of the study. This can be done in two to three pages. Wait for the professor’s comments.
Week 5
Unit 5:Read your text and a journal article on the Role of the Labor Unions and Staffing. Cite appropriate references from your text and the journal article in the summary paper. Submit the summary paper to your instructor.
Week 6
Unit 6:Read one academic article on Ethical, Legal, Effective Staffing of Organizations. Submit a two-page analysis of the material read
Week 7
Unit 7: Read your text and a journal article on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Internal and External Recruiting Practices. Cite appropriate references from your text and the journal article in the summary paper. Submit the summary paper to your instructor.
Week 8 – Final Exam
Unit 8: Submit your twelve-page Reflective/Term Paper. Wait for the professor’s comments.
