3 Course Certificate Program

You must complete 3 of the following courses to earn the School Security Certificate:
EDU511 - Crisis Management for Schools
EDU512 - Physical Security for Schools
EDU513 - Gangs in Schools
EDU521 - Security for Colleges and Universities
* Each class allows 10 weeks for completion. You may accelerate each course by turning in the assignments earlier with a “C” grade or better.

Course Scope:

The primary purpose of this course is to provide the student with a broad understanding of the requirements for a School Security strategy in the United States.

The course is designed into four courses: The School Security Certificate course is formatted for 180/240 contact hours of self paced study. Upon completion of the Certificate course, learners will be awarded the School Security Certificate.

The cost for each course is $300. The total cost is $900, or $1,200 if you take all four courses.

This format allows each student the opportunity to take the three courses most relevant to their current working situation with a school system.

Review each course syllabus by clicking on the course number above. Most will have reading assignments from an assigned text and require a student to the review of a number of PDF files and supporting web sites. At the end of each week are a number of questions. Students will answer the questions in a short essay format and email them to the instructor. Students will be required to answer weekly questions to each week in order, prior to progressing to the next week. Students will also be required to write an School Self Assessment Paper and essay/research papers on topics dealing with School Security during the courses. After successful completion of three courses the learner will receive a School Security Certificate.

You may study at your own pace and move towards certification as quickly as your schedule will allow.

  2. To develop a clear understanding of the elements of a school emergency plan.
  3. To review and apply proven prevention and mitigation strategies.
  4. To successfully integrate prevention and mitigation strategies into the school emergency plan.
  5. To develop an emergency preparedness strategy.
  6. To learn and apply the fundamentals of emergency training, education, exercises and evaluation.
  7. To develop the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to integrate the emergency preparedness strategy into the safe schools plan.
  8. To review and apply the steps needed to create a successful response plan.
  9. To successfully integrate the response plan into the school emergency plan.
  10. To develop strategies for school crisis recovery.
  11. To effectively integrate the school recovery strategy into the school emergency plan.

  1. To develop a better understanding of physical security for schools.
  2. To examine a detailed review of physical security best practices based on a Department of Justice study
  3. To reexamine the physical security practices of your own school system and to take positive action to improve your school’s security posture:

  1. To examine gang activity in the United States.
  2. To analyze the relationship between gang activity in the community and in our schools.
  3. To familiarize students with promising gang intervention strategies for our schools.
  4. To understand the foundation and application of the GREAT Model in our nation’s schools.

  1. To develop a better understanding of physical security for colleges.
  2. To examine a detailed review of security best practices based on publications created by the American Society for Industrial Security.
  3. To reexamine the physical security practices of your own college/university system and to take positive action to improve your school’s security posture:
