Course Description:

This course is directly concerned with the management issues surrounding information and telecommunications systems. It presents the ingredients of management knowledge necessary for success in the management of information technology. The course views information technology from the perspective of managers at several levels – from the CEO to the first line manager. It provides framework and management principles for current or aspiring managers to cope with the challenges inherent in the rapidly advancing technology.

This course presents fundamental knowledge essential to managing an information technology function successfully within a large organization. It considers strategic and operational issues, the significance of rapidly advancing information technology, and human and organizational issues related to technology introduction and use. The course focuses on management systems and models of successful behavior that capitalize on the opportunities and minimize the effects of the inevitable pitfalls.

Readings, Homework, Cases and Exams:

The learning methodology used in this course consists of lectures, discussions, case analyses and readings.

Readings: Students are expected to complete all text and supplementary reading assignments during the week that the assignment is due (see Course Schedule). It is student’s responsibility to make up all required readings before the end of each week.

Papers: All assigned cases will be prepared for presentation and discussion during the week in which it is assigned. No cases will be accepted late since relevant class discussion will take place during the class period it is assigned.

Class Discussion: Each student will be expected to participate during class online discussions whether the discussion be on text material, a minor case, or paper subjects. There will be designated discussion forums for each week. Students are expected to post their assignments, comment on each other postings and ask relevant questions in the forums designated for the current week.

Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements are made with the instructor.

Attendance:
There are no scheduled online sessions for this class. Most communications will be asynchronous, through threaded discussion, e-mail and the Web site postings.
