Introduction

This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding and skills of various technologies used in the creation of World Wide Web based applications.

Class Meeting Times

This course is fully online. There are no classroom meetings.

Course Description

This introductory level course will explore current techniques in web design, authoring, creation and implementation of web pages using various web development tools. Students will design web pages using frames, backgrounds, tables, multimedia and interface with a database. Programming tools employed include HTML, PERL, JAVA and JAVASCRIPT.

Internet & World Wide Web: How to program, Complete Course, 2nd edition, by Harvey M. Deitel, Paul J. Deitel, T. R. Nieto. Prentice Hall (Pearson), 2001. ISBN #: 0130308978

This will come with software in the box.

You will need a computer with at least a 56K modem/DSL/cable modem, Pentium processor, enough memory to download and retain several software programs. In addition, you will need to latest releases of Internet Explorer and Netscape.

When a grade is on the borderline, I reserve the right to adjust the grade up or down (+ or -) depending on how I view your progress in the course.

Assignments:

Homework will be assigned each week. Each new week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday evenings at 11:00 pm ET.

All assignments are due by Sunday evenings at 11:00 pm ET. If for any reason the homework assignment is not turned in on time, the grading will start at:

10 point deduction Next day
10 point deduction Two days late
15 point deduction Three days late

Homework will not be graded at all after three days late.

All homework assignments should be attached/sent through the digital dropbox in the course.

You will need to backup your work. In the event of a power outage or failure of the server, you will lose some or all of your files. Backup your files on your hard drive as well as another medium such as a floppy disk, CD, or tape.

Exams:

The midterm and final exams will be 50 mutliple-choice questions each. You will have 2 hours to complete each exam. The testing program will not cut you off at the 2-hour limit, but will log the amount of time you spent taking the exam and forward that information on with the exam answers. If you are not able to complete the exam within the 2-hour time limit, please Submit what you have so that you will get credit for what you were able to answer.

The testing program will also keep track of how many times you log into each exam. Please only log in once to each exam, and make sure you are ready to complete the exam when you do. If you are in the middle of an exam and get disconnected from the internet, please e-mail me and log back into the exam immediately so that I know you are continuing with the exam.

Class Attendance and Participation:

Class attendance and participation are necessary for course understanding. You should be logging in to the course as much as possible to fully understand the material.

You are responsible for all material presented and assignments made in the course. If you are new to the online course format, I would suggest that you print out the materials in the course so that they can be in front of you as your work throughout the term.

You are responsible to submit homework assignments and answer discussion questions in a timely manner. You will need to answer the discussion questions each week as well as make at least 2 comments to other students' postings.

You are responsible for knowing drop dates, etc., as published by the College.

The highest levels of academic integrity are expected at all times. Any violation of the above standards will result in the maximum penalties as permitted by the College.

Students in this course will be expected to comply with the College's Policy on Academic Integrity.
