COURSE SYLLABUS: Systems and Network Security

Course Description:

In this course, the main focus is to teach the student to learn to create a successful security program by learning about the technical aspects of networking systems. The student will explore the role and function of Firewalls, smart cards, access controls along with developing and managing effective policies and procedures. The course will also focus on secure Internet connections, how to recover from security breaches and how to prevent hacker attacks, through real case scenarios.

The time frame for this course is eight (8) weeks.

COURSE REQUIRMENTS
Week One

• Read Chapters 1,2,3
• Write a two page paper on the network that is in place at your place of work. This can be a generalized approach, primarily focusing on the actual architecture.

Week Two

• Read Chapters 4,5,6
• Find an article related to attacks on networks. Discuss “what,” took place and what could have prevented this attack.

Week Three

• Read Chapters 7,8
• Discuss the role of backing up of systems and how they should be implemented. Use resources from the Internet or journals to provide standards and practices used by various organizations.

Week Four

• Read Chapters 9,10,11
• Find an article discussing a company with e-commerce success or failure. In two pages, discuss your findings, or offer solutions to problems encountered by this organization.
• Submit Midterm (90 minutes/open book)

Week Five

• Read Chapters 12,13
• Find an article on a modern hacker. Discuss the techniques employed by the hacker to penetrate a system.

Week Six

• Read Chapters 14,15
• Discuss the role of log events and what they can tell an System Administrator about the health of the network.

Week Seven

• Read Chapters 16,17
• Look at the issue of FAT vs. NTFS. In a two page paper, discuss the benefits/disadvantages of both systems.

Week Eight

TERM PAPER

• In 8 to 10 pages, double spaced, using all of the information learned from this course, revisit your IS in your workplace and prepare a blueprint, from a Network Administrator’s perspective, that will demonstrate a clear understanding of the principles and policies required to have and maintain a secure network. Give an overall picture of the health of the current system in place, along with point out possible problematic areas. If this situation does not apply, this paper can be used to design an IS , with security policies and procedures in place for a potential business. Keep in mind that the more specific you are, the better the paper will be. When completed, this paper should be of the caliber that it could be presented to your CIO, CEO and CFO for consideration. Due to the complexity of this paper, and all that is involved, this should be started no later than the second week of class.

Assignments and Writing

At the undergraduate level, students are expected to have an advanced writing style, Therefore, all written assignments must be typed on a computer in an organized format of your choice as long as it is appropriate for the information being presented. Because effective communication is a primary element of success in today's competitive business environment, spelling, grammar and punctuation will be strictly enforced and graded as part of the assignment. Exceptions will not be made.

The length of your writings is up to you as long as content is not sacrificed. Please stay within the maximum guidelines I have listed.

Plagiarism is unquestionably the worst academic violation a student can commit. If you are caught utilizing material without proper reference or citation, you will receive an automatic failing grade for this course. All references must be cited as a footnote or endnote utilizing any acceptable style of your choice. If you have any questions in this area, please contact me.

All assignments must be turned in on time to receive full credit. Please make prior arrangements for unusual circumstances.
