PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:

This course examines various matters pertaining to today's law enforcement agencies. The course addresses police organization, police personnel, police discretion, police culture, police operations, police ethics, police technology and other topics. It is designed for those planning a career as a criminal justice professional.

REQUIREMENTS:     Online Book Store

1. Readings. The required text is An Introduction to Policing, Third Edition, by John S. Dempsey and Linda S. Forst. The text is published by Wadsworth (Thomson Learning), 2004/2005, ISBN: 053464290X .

2. Exams/Papers. Students will be required to complete one exam for each of the eleven units. The exams consist of open-book short answer questions.

3. Grades. The exams will be weighted as follows.

Unit One – 13%

Unit Two – 6%

Unit Three – 7%

Unit Four – 9%

Unit Five – 16%

Unit Six – 8%

Unit Seven – 21%

Unit Eight – 6%

Unit Nine – 3%

Unit Ten – 8%

Unit Eleven – 3%

4. Grading Scale.

90-100 points = A Excellent
80-89 points = B Above Average
70-79 points = C Average
60-69 points = D Below Average
59 points or Below = F Failing Grade
