Course Description:

The issues of law enforcement agencies in American jurisprudence; the laws of arrest and rules of evidence. The examination of the full range of rights in criminal justice not only in philosophical and social terms, but also in terms of specific cases, including the rights of the accused and extending to the rights of convicts, witnesses, victims, ex-convicts, journalists, and the more generalized rights of participation by advocacy groups and individuals, taxpayers, and citizens in criminal justice policy and administration.

Course Requirements:

The final grade will be based on written chapter reviews a student has to prepare on each chapter of material read (70%) and on a research paper (30%).

Academic Dishonesty:

Any form of academic dishonesty is regarded as a very serious violation of college regulations. Any student suspected of engaging in such activity will be subject to the full set of procedures set forth by the college.

Chapter Reviews:

Once a student finishes reading a chapter of material, the student has to prepare a typewritten (double-spaced) review of that chapter.

That review must:
1. Identify the main theme of the reading in one or two paragraphs.
2. Provide ten points from the reading that support the main theme (with page numbers).
3. Identify and define three critical terms from the reading.
4. Provide answers to the following questions (two or three paragraphs per question):
a. Did what you read contradict something that you believe and in what way?
b. Do you think that what you have read is reliable; why or why not?
c. In what way did the reading relate to your own experiences.
