COURSE OVERVIEW:

I am happy to provide you with information and instructions regarding this course. As you know, you have a time limit to complete this course. This time limit is eight weeks.

This is an exciting course and I am sure you will learn some of the most interesting principles related to Human Osteology. After successful completion of the course, you will have a much greater understanding of the issues in Human Osteology that are applicable to criminal justice and criminology. Also you will learn about some of the most current and pressing issues.

This course is an undergraduate level course. It is formatted to be self-directed, along with one-on-one mentoring by faculty. As your instructor, you and I communicate throughout your time spent in this important study. Communication can be by e-mail.

As an undergraduate level course, you must be prepared to operationalize the concepts learned into the reality of today's environment of criminal justice and criminology. The readings in the text will assist in meeting this broad-based goal.

You will find the textbooks for this course to be one of the best available for the study of Human Osteology by students of criminal justice and criminology. It is packed with information.

SUMMARY:

This course is an undergraduate course for students in the Online Bachelor of Science in Applied Police Science Degree Program and who desire a concentration in Police Forensics. This is a core course that focuses on a general understanding of Human Osteology. Some of the topics/ subjects covered include; the skull, recovery of skeletal remains, and reporting of skeletal remains.

Learning will provide students with the necessary foundation to progress toward graduation.

The course is formatted as an online course. There is are four main examinations. There may be some quizzes throughout the course. Students are encouraged to submit questions, and discuss issues and problems with the instructor. Reading assignments from the textbooks are assigned. There may be weekly written responses to related questions that are to be turned into the instructor.

EXAMINATIONS:

There are four examinations for this course. There may be quizzes throughout the course. Each exam and quiz have an objective part and an essay part. The test (examinations and quizzes) are "open" book. They thoroughly test knowledge in key areas of course content. While open book, they require thought and knowledge of the related content for successful completion.

All examinations and quizzes are taken "online." The test are accessed through the web site for Canyon College. When you are ready to take the examinations, please e-mail me at least 2 business days in advance and request authorization to take your exam. I will have sent to you an ID and password to access the examinations. The quizzes will be sent to you without you needing to request them.

When you are ready to take the examinations, access the web site, and complete the examination. Access each exam only once. If you have difficulties, notify your instructor or the administration right away. You will receive your score (exam and quizzes) from me in approximately two business days.

Please plan to take each exam at 2 week intervals. The final examination must be taken by the last day of the final week of the course.

GRADE ASSIGNMENT FOR EXAMINATIONS:

You will receive a letter grade, based on your over all score achievement. The grading scale is as follows:

90% - 100% = A
80% - 89% = B
70% - 79% = C
60% - 69% = D
Below 60% = F

You will receive a letter grade for each of the exams and quizzes. Your final course grade will be an average of the scores you achieve on all examinations and quizzes. Each exam and quiz are equal in making the overall grade for this class.

I will e-mail you your score and letter grade for each of the test.

READING AND WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

There may be assignments for reading, case studies, and research throughout the class time.

These assignments may be sent to you via e-mail.

Your reading assignments are self-paced.


  1. Please read from your textbook, "Human Osteology," chapters 1 through 6.

    The following sections may be used as reference and not as required reading material. The sections are 2.5; 2.6; 2.8; 4.5.1; 4.5.2; 4.7.1; 4.8.1; 4.9.1; 4.11.1; 4.12.1; 4.13.1; 4.19.1; and 4.20.1

    After completion, you may request to take the first exam.


  2. After your first exam proceed to read from your textbook, chapters 7 through 12.

    After this completion, you may request to take the second exam.


  3. After your second exam proceed to read form our textbook, chapters 13 through 18.

    The following sections may be used as reference and not as required reading material. The sections are 18.2.1; 18.3; 18.4.4; and 18.5

    After this completion, you may request to take the third exam.


  4. After your third exam proceed to read from your textbook, chapters 19 through 21.

    After this completion, you may request to take the fourth exam.

Lab:

Please follow the directions in your student email box. Be prepared to receive instructions from 1 to 3 times per week.
Your lab work must be completed prior to taking each exam in this course.

REVIEW OF OBJECTIVES:

Be able to visualize the figures in our textbook. Have a broad understanding of the text in boldface. Detail understanding is not required. Memorization is not necessary.
