Paper/Project I:

The purpose of this project is to find out about your community-based correction programs, what the purpose is, individual roles in the implementation of the program, who benefits and at what financial cost. You need to look at effectiveness at the program for the perpetrator, victim, and community. After you have gained your information I would like for you to write a informative paper explaining your findings to me. Use quotes from the interviewed people. The paper will also include a summary of the program and your personal opinions from the information you gained through observation, interviews or from what you read in your text. At the end of your paper. . Please include a reference page of who you interviewed, their title or role in the program and the date of the interview.

Project:
  1. Identify and list 2 or more community-based correctional programs in your area.
  2. Choose one program for your topic.
  3. Interview at least 5 people in your community of which 3 must be professionals within the Criminal Justice system (attorney, judge, probation/parole officer, police officer, Prosecutor, Defense attorney, alcohol/drug counselor, social worker, etc.) and the others can be a victim, perpetrator, minister, community person at large.
  4. Find out the following information from the above interviews:
  1. How, when, and why did the program come into existence?
  2. How is the program funded? What is the approximate annual cost? per person?
  3. How does the program operate? Staff required? Special educations? Special equipment?
  4. What is the object/purpose of the program? What type of crime or perpetrator is it designed for? Is the correction program a punishment, deterrent or both?
  5. Has research been done to evaluate the program (if not, why); what was the results? How effective does the interviewee feel the program is?
  6. Was there community resistance to the program? If so, in what area was there resistance? If not, Why? What is the overall feeling in the community regarding the program?

I will grade according to content; amount of requested information (1-4 above) included; grammar, spelling and punctuation; appearance and presentation of the paper. This project is worth 40 points. You will be graded on the same items as above. Your reference page at the end should include supporting text, interviews, articles or any thing which you based your ideas or information from within your paper.
