COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is a general survey of the field of maladaptive behavior. We will first examine the prevailing perspectives in the field and then we will proceed to a consider the different forms of maladaptive behavior.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
  1. Understand the major theories related to treatment of maladaptive behavior.
  2. Examine identified therapeutic settings and approaches to treating maladaptive
  3. Develop critical thinking abilities about complex issues in mental health.

TEACHING METHODS:

This is exclusively an online course. Examinations will also be taken online.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND EVALUATION:
  1. Exams - The exams will be in the multiple-choice, matching, and true-false format. The exams will measure your knowledge of the material covered in your text. I will post study guides to help you prepare for the exams. Each exam is timed. The time allotted for each is 75 minutes. Going beyond the allotted time will result in your losing points from the exam. For each 10 minutes that you are over time (up to 30 minutes) you will lose 5% of your score. After 30 minutes, you will lose an additional 1% point for each minute that you are over.
  2. Discussion Questions: You will be given a series of questions regarding the material presented in the text. You will have a total of four sets of questions. See the classroom home page to gain access to the discussion questions.
  3. Agency Research Paper - You are to write a three-page paper on an agency devoted to the study or practice of maladaptive behavior. You may access the instructions for this paper through the classroom home page.
  4. Article Summary - You are to read and summarize one article on a topic related to maladaptive behavior.
  5. Web site-postings. You are to locate a web site which disseminate information pertaining to topics in maladaptive behavior. Write a paragraph explaining the general purpose of the web site as it pertains to maladaptive behavior. Include a discussion of the specific topics addressed by the web site. Also, state which chapter of the text the web site relates to. After locating the web site, send the URL to me via e-mail.
  6. Course Evaluation: Your final grade will be determined by the number of points you earn in the class. Points will be awarded as follows:
