INFORMATION REGARDING CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS AND OPTIONS


There are currently three options for graduates to pursue certification as a certified case manager, that we have knowledge of. Below are listed the three certifying bodies. Canyon College does not recommend one avenue of certification over another. The choice to pursue certification is an individual choice, and the selection of a certifying agency is a personal choice, as well. This information is provided as a means to inform only. Graduates must contact any or all of the certifying organizations below on their own. Canyon College does not assist in making any types of contacts.

The American Academy of Case Management - this certifying agency is a division of the American Institute of Healthcare Professionals, Inc. They provide a process for a Case Management "Fellowship" program. The Case Management Certificate Program offered at Canyon College has been approved by the Academy for graduates to apply for Fellowship status in the Academy. Please contact the American Academy of Case Management, for more information.

American Nurses Credentialing Center - is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association. They offer a certification process in Case Management. Certification is by examination and is offered at many sites across the country. Please contact them directly for more information regarding their process for certification in case management.

Commission for Case Manager Certification - this organization provides for a process of certification for case managers. Certification is by examination. They are located in Illinois. Please contact the Commission directly to obtain information regarding their certification process and eligibility requirements.

CEU's for CCM RECERTIFICATION: Graduates who are certified as Case Managers by the "Commission for Case Manager Certification" may submit transcripts of this course in order to obtain continuing education contact hours. The commission states; "participants the class can submit their continuing education attendance verification form or if it is a college course, their course syllabus or original transcript in order to obtain continuing education contact hours. Participants can submit their information with a post attendance application (refer to their Criteria For Certification Renewal and Continuing Education booklet they received at their time of certification) and receive their credit." (Commission for Case Manager Certification, Rolling Meadows, IL, March 24, 2000).

APPROVED CONTACT HOURS/CEU'S - The certificate program in Case Management has been approved for 150 contact hours of continuing education by the American Institute of Healthcare Professionals, Inc., through its division, "The Center for Continuing Professional Education." Graduates of our certificate program can contact the American Institute of Healthcare Professionals, Inc, (AIHCP) and receive a formal certificate detailing achievement of contact hours.

The AIHCP is a professional organization dedicated to the growth and support of quality health care practice. Its division, the Center for Continuing Professional Education reviews and approves continuing education programs in healthcare, according to standards and criteria for quality healthcare education programs that offer a significant contribution to participants.

The case management continuing education course allows for credits for case managers who are already certified with the commission for case manager certification. These usually certified case managers such as health care professionals working in the health care industry and seeking courses or programs for recertification in case management. These individuals may be nurses, either licensed or registered nurses, RN, a physician, or physicians assistant, medical doctors, MD, physical therapist, respiratory therapist, or other health care therapist. The studies in these case management courses offers studies for certification or recertification courses in case management.
