COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course will introduce the theories, skills and modifications that enable teachers to include students with exceptionalities in regular education classes. In addition, candidates will learn about students with numerous disabilities and special health care needs, along with the accommodations often made for them in the Individualized Education Plans (IEP). The course focuses on three important facets: the effect of disabilities on learning and behavior, collaborating with colleagues to prepare students to their highest levels of academic achievement, and independence within inclusion settings.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 (chapters 1-5) of text and part 2 (chapters 6-11) of the text is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Assignment One
Read the Churchill Text: Chapters 1-5.
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. List and describe the multiple roles of the special educator.
  2. Please define special education as the federal government has and also define it in your own words.
  3. List and describe the qualifications necessary to become a highly qualified teacher.
  4. What is assistive technology and what are several examples?
  5. What are some common legal issues with regards to a student’s Individualized Education Plan?
  6. What are some of the effective methods for stopping classroom disruptions?
  7. What are some of the practical tips for managing your classroom effectively?
  8. List and describe two of the theoretical perspectives related to behavior management.
  9. How does a teacher effectively link assessment to teaching?
  10. What are the key informal methods of assessment?
Assignment Two
Read Chapters 6- 11 of the Churchill Text.
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. List and describe some of the major considerations in instructional planning.
  2. What are teacher-directed strategies? Give an example.
  3. What are cooperative learning strategies? List and describe an example of one.
  4. List and describe the responsibilities of a paraprofessional.
  5. List and describe some of strategies for clarifying classroom rules and responsibilities for paraprofessionals.
  6. List and describe some of steps to avoid conflict when dealing with paraprofessionals.
  7. What are the common steps in the consultation process? List and briefly describe them.
  8. Discuss the steps in effectively communicating and collaborating with parents.
  9. What are some helpful hints or tips when conferencing with a parent? List and describe them.
  10. What are some practical tips for coping with stress? State several effective time management techniques to help you to achieve your educational objectives.
FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss what he or she feels to be the key components and/or skills to educate the special education population of the twenty-first century (2 pages). The candidate should also provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal preferences (in your opinion what are the most effective classroom strategies and techniques) from either the reading or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
