Course Description:

This course is designed to examine effective educational leadership and facilitation competencies.

Learning Objectives and Goals:

Demonstrate knowledge of systems theory by researching and applying leadership styles to a school or organizational setting.
Evaluate and analyze the environment, context, and community needs of the organization
Develop learning goals appropriate for a pluralistic society for the school
Evaluate the different styles of communication within the school or organization
Demonstrate effective consensus-building and negotiation skills and strategies
Evaluate how vision, energy, mission, and culture affect the school organization
Evaluate theories for developing and implementing strategic plans to motivate people through negotiation.

Assignments

All assignments must be typed, double-spaced and written in appropriate APA format style. Assignments should be free from spelling and grammatical errors and be a representation of graduate academic work. All work must be submitted using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition (2001). Washington DC: American Psychological Association (APA) format. Students are referred to Appendix A in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for thesis and paper format.

Students are encouraged to integrate professional as well as personal experiences in all of their assignments.

Feel free to consult with other students who are taking the course. However, all work must be your own work. Do not plagiarize from your text or any other source. Students are referred to pages 349-350 in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for a more complete discussion of plagiarism.

Week One:
Read Chapter 1: Management: An Applied Behavioral Science Approach
Read Chapter 2: Motivation and Behavior
Read Chapter 3: Motivating

E-mail instructor your contact information such as: e-mail address and a brief introduction biography

Write a 3-page journal of your readings

Submit the assignment to the instructor.
Week Two:
Read Chapter 4: Leadership: An Initial Perspective
Read Chapter 5: Leadership: Situational Approaches

Research and describe
Define leadership. In a 2-3 page paper, how different leadership theories apply to your school or organizational setting. (Use APA style for supporting references)

Submit the assignment to the instructor.
Week Three:
Read Chapter 6: Determining Effectiveness
Read Chapter 7: Diagnosing the Environment

Analysis Report:
Submit a two-page analysis of chapters (APA format when referencing materials).
Week Four:
Read Chapter 8: Situational Leadership
From your own experience, identify a situation and describe how you would utilize Situational Leadership to diagnose the situation and identify the appropriate leadership style.
What are the three key factors in the concept of Situational Leadership?
Describe the four basic leadership styles in detail (APA format).

Week Five:
Read Chapter 9: Situational Leadership, Perception, and the Impact of Power
Read Chapter 10: Situational Leadership: Training and Development
Analysis Report Two Due:
Submit a two page analysis on both chapters (APA format when referencing materials).
Week Six: Read Chapter 11: The Situational Leader and Constructive Discipline
Read Chapter 12: Building Effective Relationships

Week Seven: Read Chapter 13: Effective Communication
Read Chapter 14: Leading Effective Teams
Read Chapter 17: Planning and Implementing Change

Week Eight: Read Chapter 18: Leadership to Achieve Quality
Read Chapter 19: leadership Strategies for Organizational Transformation
Read Chapter 21: Synthesizing Management Theory: Integrating Situational Leadership with the Classics

Research Paper:

Discuss Situational Leadership and what it entails. What are the attributes of a leader whose ideologies and methodologies are based on Situational Leadership? What are the merits and demerits of situational leadership? Feel free to utilize questions and statements indicated as well as other ideas/points of interest you have identified during your readings. (Not less than 4 pages in APA Style)

This is an 8-week, blended, graduate level course. The course is divided into topics that are designed to provoke thought and discussion regarding key issues in Educational leadership
Students proceed through the topics at their own pace, working with their instructor and interacting with instructor via e-mail.
