COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

The purpose of this course is to introduce candidates to the study of the school as a social entity. In undertaking this study candidates will consider the purpose of public schooling; the historical context needed to interpret the role that schools play; the problem of academic achievement; school organization and governance; the interrelationship between schooling and issues of diversity; teachers’ lives and careers; and school reform and the dynamics of community. Through course readings and assignments, candidates’ experiences in this course will make them an informed and thoughtful professional, specifically where matters of the role of the school as a social institution are concerned, as well as a more empowered educator with respect to the social role of schooling and the democratic underpinnings of education in the US.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 of text and part 2 of the text) is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment One
Read Part 1 of the Spring Text: Chapters 1-5
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. List and describe the political goals of schooling.
  2. List and describe the social goals of schooling.
  3. List and describe the economic goals of schooling.
  4. Describe the common-school model.
  5. Describe the high-stakes testing model.
  6. Discuss the issues that arise with regards to racism and sexism.
  7. Review Public law 94-142, give a description, and discuss the implications that the law has had on public education.
  8. Discuss the changing population of U.S. schools.
  9. Choose a type of student discussed in chapter 4 and list and describe some appropriate interventions and or strategies.
  10. What is ethnocentric education?
Assignment Two
Read Part 2: Chapters 6- 10
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. Compare and contrast the choices available to students to obtain an education in the U.S.
  2. Where do schools get their required resources? Describe the process.
  3. What are the two major teacher unions and what are the differences between them?
  4. How does the No Child Left Behind Act define a Highly Qualified Teacher?
  5. What are teaching standards?
  6. Describe John Dewey’s progressive education format.
  7. What is the issue with religion in schools? How do feel about this issue?
  8. What are the parent’s rights?
  9. What are the teacher’s rights?
  10. List and describe some of influential or critical methods of effective pedagogy.
COURSE ITINERARY

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss what he or she feels to be the key components of a rational educational foundation (2 pages). It also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her philosophy on education (2 pages). The paper should be four to five (4-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
