COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course focuses on the benefits of using data from formalized and anecdotal student assessments to drive instruction and increase achievement. This course focuses on developing skills to collect and analyze different forms of data to inform and motivate curriculum reform and improve classroom instruction. It will pay particular attention to utilizing and interpreting state and classroom assessments for decision making.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

In this course, candidates will be assessed through three assignments. The assignments include two response developments to several capstone questions and a reflective paper.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

Assignment #1
Provide responses to the following questions. Unless otherwise indicated, the instructor will assume that the candidate is citing the text.
  1. What information do ideal curriculum documents provide (refer to table 1.6)?
  2. The author identifies systematic methods for curriculum development and identifying curricular concerns. In your opinion, to what extent did A Nation at Risk (The National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983) impact public educations’ movement towards a data-driven entity?
  3. In your opinion, after consulting the text, what has been the most prevailing perspective of today’s curriculum?
  4. From a curriculum standpoint, what is constructivism and what impact does it play on curriculum uniformity?
Assignment #2
Provide responses to the following questions. Unless otherwise indicated, the instructor will assume that the candidate is citing the text.
  1. There are two approaches to the purpose and content of curriculum, constructivist and behavioral. Differentiate between the two approaches.
  2. Describe a basic structure of curriculum as presented in chapter 6 of the text.
  3. Define and describe the three approaches to curriculum organization.
Assignment #3
Provide responses to the following questions. Unless otherwise indicated, the instructor will assume that the candidate is citing the text.
  1. What are temporal frame factors? Discuss in terms of the classroom educator.
  2. Beginning on page 242 of the text, Posner discusses standardized testing as a means for decision making. State your case on standardized testing, including your personal findings.
  3. Is data readily available for collection and subsequent analysis in many schools? Describe.
  4. Provide a brief summary or reflection on chapter 12. How do you feel your paradigm on curriculum analysis and critique has changed?
