COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course offers a description of all of the major emotional and behavioral disorders facing the twenty-first century child and adolescent. It will examine a variety of demographics and dimensions of emotional and behavioral disorders and outline how to identify students while assessing their disorders. The course will also survey appropriate interventions and will review appropriate cognitive and behavioral models.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 (chapters 1-6) of text and part 2 (chapters 7-12) of the text is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Assignment One
Read the Webber & Plotts Text: Chapters 1-6
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. Define Emotional and Behavior Disorder.
  2. What are some of the major factors that influence concepts of deviance?
  3. List and describe the major characteristics of students with emotional and behavioral disorders.
  4. When looking at the historical perspectives on children with emotional and behavioral disorders how has thought evolved throughout time?
  5. Discuss the process of identifying emotional behavioral disorders and in particular the procedurals requirements under the IDEA regulations?
  6. What is the role of the special education teacher in the identification process?
  7. What is the role of the special education teacher in the assessment and intervention process?
  8. How does Erickson’s developmental stage theory differ from Freud’s conceptualization?
  9. Can cognitive interventions help students with emotional and behavioral disorders?
  10. What is learned helplessness and how does it impact emotional well-being?

Read Chapters 7-12 of the Webber & Plotts Text
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. What are the major assumptions of behavioral theory?
  2. How would a behaviorist define teaching and learning? How would you define it?
  3. List and describe some of the new mental health service delivery models have been developed in the past twenty-five years? Which do see as being effective?
  4. List and describe the role of a teacher in the systems model.
  5. List and describe some of the common characteristics of depression and bipolar disorder. How do these effect students education at school?
  6. List and describe the therapeutic interventions that are supported by research for internalizing disorders?
  7. What are the defining features of anxiety disorders?
  8. List and describe the most effective treatments when dealing with students with ADHD.
  9. What role can special education teachers play in preventing at risk adolescents from dropping out of school, involving themselves in gang activity or becoming subject to an eating disorder?
  10. What are some of the most effective positive interventions and supports? (ie. Academic interventions, inclusion etc.).
FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss what he or she feels to be the key components and methods of dealing with emotional and behavioral students in today’s classrooms (2 pages) and it also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal experiences and preferences (in your opinion what are the most effective classroom strategies and techniques) when dealing with children with emotional and behavioral disabilities from either the reading or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
