COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

Focuses on basic curricular practices and strategies in developing programs for students with mental retardation. Emphasis on the teaching-learning process, individual and group intervention, and implementation of a very basic skill set to succeed within the given content areas. The collaborative skills needed to establish a positive parent and professional relationship will also be evaluated.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 (chapters 1-7) of text and part 2 (chapters 8 -15) of the text is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. What does the effective adapted physical educator look like?
  2. What are leisure and recreation opportunities for individuals with disabilities?
  3. List and describe a few of the major types of assessments used determine the needs of an in particular disability student.
  4. List and briefly describe the major components of the Individual Education Plan.
  5. Discuss the difference between incidental and planned learning?
  6. Discuss the major controversy over special education inclusion.
  7. Discuss the consultant’s role in the inclusion process.
  8. Define and describe transition.
  9. What are some methods of assertive and effective discipline?
  10. What does appropriate interaction with other special education personnel look like?

Read the Auxter, Pyfer & Huettig Text: Chapters 8 - 18
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. What are the major causes of poor physical fitness?
  2. What are some effective teaching strategies for physical educators working with children who have been abused?
  3. List and describe some of the early childhood intervention programs.
  4. What are the major characteristics of mental retardation?
  5. List and describe some of the instructional strategies that are most effective in an inclusive environment.
  6. Define and give an example of a specific learning disability.
  7. What are the causes of mental health disorders?
  8. List and describe the some of the many community based opportunities available for these students with disabilities.
  9. List and describe some of the common speech and language disorders are.
  10. What are some of the common characteristics and issues surrounding students who have Tourette Syndrome?
FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss how to effectively provide an appropriate education for a student who is mentally retarded and the considerations that must be taken for the child who has this disability (2 pages). The paper also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal experiences and preferences (in your opinion what are the most effective classroom strategies and techniques) when dealing with children who are mentally retarded from either the reading or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
