COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

The purpose of this course is to introduce candidates to the study of curriculum theory and the multiple perspectives that surround educational philosophy. In this course candidates will investigate the nature of curriculum theory, differentiate curriculum theory from curriculum planning, place the study of curriculum theory within the larger history of the American school curriculum, and explore alternative models of curriculum theory such as spiraled or layered curriculum. In exploring these issues, the course will explore the issues and questions that curriculum theory addresses and attempts to answer. Most importantly, this course will consider the role that curriculum theory plays in the professional work of educators.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

1. Curriculum Theories, Defined
Candidates will prepare a one-page description of both layered curriculum and spiraled curriculum. Information gathered for this assignment should be collected from credible websites.

2. Controversy Papers
The candidate must prepare three (3), two page papers dealing with controversial issues that correspond to relevant topics in this course. Candidates may select the issues they evaluate, but at least two must come from the following issues (2, 4, 9, 14, 18, 19, or 21). Each paper is limited to only one particular issue. In the paper, candidates will discuss the evidence on the issues based on the readings, reach a conclusion on the controversy, and explain the reasoning behind their conclusion. The only source that is required is the text; however, the candidate may include other sources if he/she chooses. The papers will be evaluated in terms of:

COURSE ITINERARY
  1. Order the required text for the course
  2. Begin work on spiraled and layered curriculum descriptions
  3. Email spiraled and layered curriculum descriptions to the instructor
  4. Read and review the text
  5. Identify the issues that you wish to evaluate
  6. Complete the three (3) controversial papers and email to the instructor
  7. Upon receipt of your third controversial paper, your final grade for the course will be submitted to the Registrar within 24-48 hours.
