COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course provides the candidate with an overview of special education process, from the initial identification process to the collaboration between the school, family, and community. The course outlines the appropriate instructional strategies and techniques for students with exceptionalities that fall into both high and low –prevalence of IDEA-04. The course will also cover material detailing other exceptionalities such as students who are at risk, students who have ADD/ADHD, and those who are talented and gifted.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 (chapters 1-7) of text and part 2 (chapters 8 -15) of the text is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Assignment One
Read the Tayor, Smiley & Richards Text: Chapters 1-7
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. Who are Exceptional students? List and describe a few Exceptional Students.
  2. What are some of the special education related services mentioned in the text?
  3. List and describe a few of the major court cases that have affected special education?
  4. How Exceptional students are initially identified?
  5. Discuss the process of how students become eligible for special education?
  6. What are the foundations and characteristics of learning disabilities?
  7. What are the causes and characteristics of children with mental retardation?
  8. What are the causes and characteristics of children with emotional and behavioral disorders?
  9. How are students with communication disorders identified?
  10. What are some considerations for teaching students with communication disorders?
Assignment Two
Read the Tayor, Smiley & Richards Text: Chapters 8-15
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. What are the major causes of deafness and hard of hearing?
  2. How do teachers effectively teach students who are deaf and hard of hearing?
  3. List and describe some of the foundations of blindness and low vision.
  4. How are students with physical or health disabilities identified?
  5. List and describe some of the necessary instructional considerations for teaching students with physical or health disabilities.
  6. List and describe the definitions of the different types of autism in the spectrum.
  7. What are the causes and characteristics of the Autism Spectrum?
  8. List and describe the most important instructional considerations for teaching students with severe disabilities.
  9. How are students that are at risk identified and how are the effectively taught?
  10. What are some instructional considerations for teaching students who are talented, gifted, and those with ADHD?
FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss one of the major disabilities (discussed in the text) and the considerations that must be taken for the child who has this disability (2 pages). The paper also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal experiences and preferences (in your opinion what are the most effective classroom strategies and techniques) when dealing with children with the chosen disability from either the reading or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
