Course Description:

This introductory course in elementary school administration considers current theories on and principles and practices of the organization, administration, and operation of elementary schools. The key role of the administrator in the success of all students and in the continuous improvement of staff and programs will be a central focus of the course.

To support this focus, topics include best practices in:
• Teaching.
• Governance.
• Leadership.
• Curriculum.
• planning.
• School improvement.
• Use of data.
• Staff development.
• Technology.
• Community engagement.


Learning Goals:

The student will develop a knowledge and understanding of:
  1. The research and standards pertaining to effective elementary school administration, including the wealth of research and resources available to guide the actions and decisions of school leaders online.
  2. Leadership practices that place student and adult learning at the center.
  3. Creating and communicating a vision of learning within an elementary or middle school culture that is based on student academic and social development, opportunity for all students to meet high standards, and professional growth of staff members.
  4. Best practices related to curriculum and instruction, monitoring student achievement, and the use of technology and other instructional materials in the school.
  5. Instructional improvement processes, driven by multiple sources of data, and in collaboration with all stakeholders.
  6. Creating a culture of continuous learning for adults, including the school leader, tied to student learning and other school goals.
  7. Strategies to actively engage the community in sharing responsibility for students and school success.

Supplementary Resourses:

Supplementary resources are found in the textbook. The students are encouraged to become familiar with at least twenty five of them.

Assessment:
  1. Eight reading and homework assignments covering each chapter in the text.
  2. One five-page essay mid-term examination.
  3. One five-page essay final examination
  4. A seven-page Term Paper on any subject pertinent to the course.

Academic Requirements:
  1. All students are expected to "attend" the course by completing all course assignments in an academic manner and with complete preparation.
  2. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall composition will be including in the grading of all assignments.
  3. Students are required to complete each unit within a one-week time frame. At the students request, and successful completion of a unit in less than one week, the instructor will provide students with subsequent units of homework in advance.
  4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.
Method of Instruction:

ED542 is a distance learning course offered through Canyon College. Because this class is a partially self-paced program in that you may complete a specific weeks work at anytime during that week time-frame, it is essential that the student review all available materials located in the text, classroom, e-mail, and syllabus. Course examinations will be administered on-line during the fourth and eighth weeks of class. Prior to the submission of the first assignment each student is required to submit via e-mail to the instructor the following information:
