Course Description:

The intent of this course is to examine the processes of school supervision and instruction. It is a course designed especially for school administrators, directors of curriculum, and supervisors in which the course content examines the role and function of the supervisor of instruction and an instructional leader for all grade levels.

Learning Objectives and Goals:

Student will be able to understand the relationship between effective school supervision and instructional leadership.
Student will be able to understand how one’s behavior and decisions affect other groups within the organizations.
Explore different techniques of supervision and instructional leadership.
Examine effective supervision for successful schools.
Student will acquaint themselves with supervisory behavioral processes.

Assignments

All assignments must be typed, double-spaced and written in appropriate APA format style. Assignments should be free from spelling and grammatical errors and be a representation of graduate academic work. All work must be submitted using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition (2001). Washington DC: American Psychological Association (APA) format. Students are referred to Appendix A in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for thesis and paper format.

Students are encouraged to integrate professional as well as personal experiences in all of their assignments.

Feel free to consult with other students who are taking the course. However, all work must be your own work. Do not plagiarize from your text or any other source. Students are referred to pages 349-350 in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th Edition for a more complete discussion of plagiarism.

Week One:

Read Chapter 2: The Norm: Why Schools Are as They Are

Read Chapter 3: The Exception What Schools Can Be.

Write a 3-page journal of your readings from these chapters.

E-mail your response to the Instructor

Week Two:

Read Chapter 4: Adult and Teacher Development within the Context of the School: Clues for Supervisory Practice

Read Chapter 5: Reflections on Schools, Teaching, and Supervision

Write a two-page journal of your readings from these chapters.

Respond to question number 5 under exercises sub-heading- Academic (page 112)

Week Three:

Read Chapter 6: Supervisory Behavior Continuum: Know Thyself

Read Chapter 7: Developmental Supervision: An Introduction

Read Chapter 8: Directive Control Behaviors

Write a 3-page journal of your readings from these chapters

Week Four:

Read Chapter 9: Directive Informational Behaviors

Read Chapter 10: Collaborative Behaviors

Analysis in 3 pages of chapters 11,12, and 13 (Apply APA format when citing and referencing materials). No Journal

Week Five:

Read Chapter 11: Nondirective Behaviors

Read Chapter 12: Developmental Supervision: Theory and Practice

Read Chapter 13: Assessing and Planning Skills

Write a 3-page journal of your readings from these chapters

Week Six:

Read Chapter 14: Observing Skills

Read Chapter 15: Research and Evaluation Skills

Read Chapter 16: Direct Assistance to Teachers

Submit a 2-page journal of these chapters

Week Seven:

Read Chapter 17: Group Development

Read Chapter 18: Professional Development

Read Chapter 19: Curriculum Development

Read Chapter 20: Action Research: The School as the Center of Inquiry

Write a 3-page journal of your readings with emphasis on you knowledge of Action Research

Week Eight:

Read Chapter 21: Supervision, Change, and School Success

Read Chapter 22: Supervision for What? Democracy and the Good School

No Journal

Research Paper: Locate at least 5 educational research articles addressing effective supervision, change, and school success of an educational environment. Write a 7- page paper with references. Research paper must meet APA format.

Academic Requirements:

All students are expected to "attend" the course by completing all course assignments in an academic manner and with complete preparation.

Grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall composition will be including in the grading of all assignments.

Method Of Instruction:

This is a distance-learning course offered through Canyon College and this class is a partially self-paced program that you may complete a specific week’s work at anytime during that week time frame. It is essential that the student review all available materials (if applicable) located in the text, lecture notes, classroom, e-mail, and syllabus. This is an 8-week course depending on student completion, some may finish earlier.
