A practical introduction to concepts and techniques of effective computer usage in various disciplines. Overview of the most widely used types of software packages. This course will provide hands-on experience using micros with available software stressing much-used applications including word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and database. Students will learn to identify the basic components and devices that comprise a computer system; to use the Internet as a source of information and a means of communication; and to use application software packages (including word processing, spreadsheets, database management, and presentation graphics).

Course Goals:

• Introduce students concepts and techniques of effective computer usage.
• Develop basic level of c learning and higher levels of critical thinking, problem solving, and cooperative learning integrating available software.
• Students will learn to identify the basic components and devices of a computer system and use the Windows operating system to manage storage and retrieval of information.
• Demonstrate an ability to create, save, edit, and print documents using a word processor, spreadsheet, database management, and presentation program and use the Internet as a source of information and method of communication.
• Discuss social and ethical issues surrounding the use of a personal computer.
• Demonstrate an ability to move throughout Windows environment using the mouse, pull-down menus, diskettes, desktop icons, windows and folders.
• Students will create educational materials using word processing, database, spreadsheet, graphics and publishing software.
• Students will search on-line databases and networks for information relative to a specific topic of their choosing.
• Students will preview educational software and evaluate its content, format, applicability.
• Students will read and discuss current issues related to the use of computers in the classroom.
