Course Text: Online Bookstore Course Description:

CMC is communication between people using applications such as e-mail, newsgroups, chat, and 3d virtual worlds. This course concentrates on the design and implementation of such applications and the analysis of CMC practices and social formations that emerge when people use these applications.

Course Goals:
  1. Introduce students to current issues in Computer Mediated communication.
  2. Provide opportunities for preliminary research in the field.
  3. Prepare students with a foundational understanding of computer mediated communication including the technologies available, the characteristics of the medium, the relationship between CMC and communication theory, and the effects of CMC on the process and dynamics of human communication and society
Course Outcomes:

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to:
  1. Identify and discuss current issues and tools in computer-mediated communication.
  2. Explain factors involved with conducting Internet research.
  3. Analyze and evaluate recent computer mediated communication research.
  4. Plan and implement basic research explorations into online communication issues.
  5. Five Areas of Blooms Taxonomy Objectives will be recognized: Knowledge, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation.
  6. Summarize the current and emerging trends in online communication.
  7. Evaluate and recognize the popular attitudes and writings about computer-mediated communication and the effects of computer mediation on the communication process including interpersonal, small group, and mass communication settings.
  8. Recognize and discuss the effects of computer-mediated communication on society and the education environment.
