COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course is an examination of prescribed methodologies for the assessment of higher-order thinking skills within the school curricula. This content will be sequentially followed by an in-depth study of the various teacher-made tests and alternative methods of assessing both the cognitive and the affective constructs of K-12 students.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course (related to individual chapters, totaling three) is valuated at ten (20) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Read Chapter 1

  1. Differentiate between psychological assessment and psychological testing.
  2. What is alternative assessment?
  3. From an educational perspective, describe the contexts for behavioral and naturalistic observations.
  4. State three points supporting computer-assisted psychological assessment (CAPA) and three points opposing CAPA.

  1. Outline the works of two significant contributors to the field of psychological testing and assessment.
  2. Based upon your professional interests, describe two significant pieces of legislation that has shaped this respective field.
  3. Discuss one significant piece of legislation that has contributed to your area of specialization.

  1. In generalized terms, describe validity.
  2. State the three approaches to assessing validity associated respectively with content validity, criterion-related validity, and construct validity.
  3. What is a criterion and how might it be contaminated?
FINAL PAPER
The topic of the final paper is test biasness and fairness (consult pages 181-188 in the text for reference). The paper should be two to three (2-3) pages in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings. The following questions should be used a framework for your paper:
  1. What is test bias and fairness?
  2. What illustration or example can be used to make these factors understandable to laypeople?
  3. How do you feel test biases and unfairness are perpetuated in standardized testing?
  4. How can equity be promoted among all test-takers?
