COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course will assist in the development of systematic strategies and techniques for effectively leading students to interactively cooperate and remain on-task and engaged in learning activities and the educational environment. It will offer many effective classroom management techniques that will help the practitioner provide an environment conducive to learning. The course will address classroom rules, physical appearance, and effective discipline strategies to promote an atmosphere that will improve instruction and increase student achievement.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course, aligning with the chapters outlined in part 1 (chapters 1-5) of text and part 2 (chapters 6-10) of the text, is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Assignment One
Read the Jones Text: Chapters 1-5
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. List and describe the social factors that influence student behavior.
  2. List and describe the author’s basic assumptions about classroom management.
  3. List and describe the factors that influence teachers’ classroom management decisions.
  4. List and describe the issues of order, care, and power and include your own personal feelings.
  5. How does a teacher establish an effective working relationship with his or her students?
  6. What are some of the effective methods for communicating care and supporting students?
  7. What activities are available for utilizing diversity as a classroom strength?
  8. Discuss briefly what school climate is, and what you feel to be important to ensure a positive school climate.
  9. How does a teacher effectively deal with parents’ criticisms?
  10. What are the key components when assessing parent contracts?
Assignment Two
Read Chapters 6- 10
Provide brief responses to the following questions. Email your responses to the instructor.
  1. What are some of the general behavior standards or rules identified in the text?
  2. State two effective classroom procedures identified in the text.
  3. What are several of the classroom management skills that help maximize on-task behavior in the classroom?
  4. List and describe some of they key issues in student motivation with regard to their ability to learn.
  5. List and describe some of major academic needs of all students and then those students with disabilities.
  6. List and describe some of the appropriate and effective responses to irresponsible student behavior.
  7. What are some suggestions for dealing with minor disruptions and the dealing with defiant behavior?
  8. What are some effective methods for solving major and continuing behavior problems?
  9. Discuss the different models of problem solving for: groups, individual students, student to student and school wide.
  10. What are some of the effective strategies for helping students develop new behavioral skills.
FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss what he or she feels to be the key components of a profound classroom management and/or behavior plan (2 pages) and it also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal preferences (in your opinion what are the most effective classroom management and behavioral techniques) from either the reading or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. While the text should be consulted for your response, it is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
