COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course will focus on effective behavioral management techniques that will help the diverse group of children with disabilities succeed inside and outside of the classroom. It will review effective collaborative consultation techniques and assist the candidate in building effective home/school partnerships.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignments indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the assignments at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

After each assignment that is submitted, the candidate will receive an email within 24 hours indicating his/her score along with possible comments or feedback from the instructor.

Each assignment in this course, aligning with the respected behavior modification choice, is valuated at thirty (30) possible points. The final paper is valuated at forty (40) possible points. Therefore, the candidate’s grade is derived from the following framework.

Assignment One
Choose a behavioral strategy and complete the following:
  1. Who came up with or invented the strategy?
  2. Explain the strategy in detail and how it applies to the classroom and/or community.
  3. What types of children with disabilities will the strategy work for? Are there any students that wouldn’t apply to this strategy?
  4. Are there any proactive measures that need to be taken to employ this strategy?
  5. What do you find to be most helpful when using the strategy? Consider the individual and classroom perspectives.
  6. What do you find to be most difficult when using the strategy? Consider the individual and classroom perspectives.
  7. How does this strategy promote a successful home to school relationship and successful behavioral approach?
Assignment Two
Choose a behavioral strategy and complete the following:
  1. Who came up with or invented the strategy?

FINAL PAPER

The final paper asks the candidate to discuss what he or she feels to be the key behavioral strategies and interventions being used to help individuals with disabilities and emotional disorders (2 pages). It also asks the candidate to provide the instructor with a brief summary of his or her own personal experiences. For example, in your opinion what are the most effective behavior modifications, management and behavioral techniques to utilize? You may utilize research or your own professional experiences (1 page). The paper should be three to five (3-5) pages total in length, 12 point font, double spaced. It is encouraged that it is personalized with your opinions and feelings.
