COURSE DESCRIPTION AND OVERVIEW

This course is principally an overview of the research on reading and its impact on learning (learning to read and reading to learn). The fundamental importance of reading as it serves as the basic foundation in school learning, and continued governmental policy emphases in this regard, will be examined in great detail. The course will offer the classroom practitioner an opportunity to explore new theories in literacy research and apply them to authentic classroom practice and instruction to ensure a strong foundation for student learning.

COURSE COMMENTARY

Each candidate enrolled in this course has up to eight weeks to complete the assignment indicated below. However, a candidate may elect to accelerate his/her course of study and finish the action plan at an earlier time without permission from the instructor.

Candidates will prepare three (3) Summary and Reading Reflection responses after reviewing the required text for the course. Each Summary and Reading Reflection response should be 2 – 3 pages in length, 12 point font, double spaced. These responses should be personalized to the candidate’s experiences and should reflect their understanding and application of the content. Each summary is valued at twenty-five (25) points.

Synthesizing information and methodology presented in the text, the candidate will prepare a brief paper one to two (1 – 2) pages that describes a creative thinking lesson, activity, or student supplement for a class (K – 12). The lesson should concentrate on the candidate’s field of interest, but may diverge accordingly. The lesson plan is valuated at twenty-five (25) points.
