Course Description:
This course focuses on multidisciplinary examination of health care systems around the world. Thirteen nations are described, and these models accurately reflect the systems in many related countries around the world. Diverse health systems from centralized and government operated to true private enterprise are presented and analyzed. The virtues and liabilities of each approach to health care delivery are explored, and lessons for world health and efficiency in healthcare delivery are considered.

Course Format:
This course is divided into four units, covering text chapters as follows:

Unit 1 – Chapters 1-5
Unit 2 – Chapters 6-10
Unit 3 – Chapters 11-15
Unit 4 – Chapters 16-18

Communication with Instructor:
Students are expected to communicate with the professor weekly during the course term. A brief email update is sufficient, although the professor will be pleased to discuss any matter by phone during the work day or during the evening hours at home.

Evaluation:
There is a written essay examination for each Unit, and a Scholarly Paper (approximately 10 pages in length) is also required for completion of the course. The Scholarly Paper topic and outline must be approved prior to writing. There is no final examination for this course.

Completion of Units One and Two will provide the midterm progress for this course.

Completion of Units Three and Four will constitute the final for this course. There is no separate final examination for this course.

Grade Weighting:
Each Unit Exam is worth 20% of the course grade, and the Scholarly Paper is worth 20% of the course grade.

About the Professor:
Dr. Gulliford is CEO of Seiling Hospital in Seiling, Oklahoma. He has fifteen years of experience in senior healthcare management. His clinical background includes work in respiratory care, critical care medicine, non-invasive and invasive cardiology, and cardiovascular perfusion. Dr. Gulliford is Vice-President of Pioneer Health Network, a voluntary group of 18 Kansas and Oklahoma hospitals, and Vice-President of the Kansas Hospital Association Southwest District. He was recently elected to Chair the Small and Rural Hospitals Division of the American Academy of Medical Administrators.
