COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course examines the state of espionage. It also reviews a counterespionage methodology and a discussion of defensive techniques including: employee screening, security awareness, asset protection and liability reduction.

Course Statement of Objectives
  1. To develop a basic understanding of counterespionage.
  2. To enhance one's knowledge of asset protection.
  3. To develop an appreciation for operations security.
  4. To increase one's understanding of personnel security.
  5. To enhance one's understanding of information security.
  6. To review commentary by counterespionage professionals.

Course Requirements:

Successfully read the assigned text, answer questions and email answers to instructor. 50 points. Five points for each question.
Research and write a five-page paper (double spaced with footnotes and bibliography) entitled: How to design a successful counterespionage strategic plan for an organization in 2005. Due by week 5. 50 points. Please cite sources. You may use APA, MLA or Chicago Style for writing formats.
TOTAL 100 POINTS.

I will determine your final grade based on the total number of points you have accumulated at the end of the semester. I do not award letter grades for each paper or exam. Your grade will be determined as follows:

95-100 points A
90-94 points A-
85-89 points B+
80-84 points B
75-79 points B-
70-74 points C+
65-69 points C
60-64 points C-
55-59 points D
below 55 points F

STUDENT ASSIGNMENTS/ACTIVITIES:

Students will successfully complete assigned readings according to schedule and email answers to instructor by the last day of each week. (Saturday) 5 points per essay.
Short essays are one-page double spaced essays dealing with various security issues. Simply email the essay to me in MSWORD by the last day of the week.

WEEK 1: Read Chapter 1. Write a short essay answering the question: What is Counter-espionage?
WEEK 2 Read Chapter 2. Write a short essay answering the question: Why do we need counterespionage strategies?
WEEK 3 Read Chapter 3. Write a short essay answering the question: How my company is vulnerable to espionage.
Week 4: Read Chapter 4. Write a short essay answering the question: How I would outline an OPSEC report for my organization.
WEEK 5: Read Chapter 5. Write a short essay answering the question: How I would design a personnel security plan for my employer, school or local government office.
WEEK 6: Read Chapter 6. Write a short essay answering the question: How I would design an information security plan for my employer, school or local government office.
WEEK 7: Read Chapter 7. Write a short essay answering the question: How I would train other employees on security awareness.
WEEK 8: Read Chapter 8. Write a short essay answering the question: How I would apply the formula for success to my organization.
WEEK 9: Find an article dealing with espionage challenges facing government and industry. Read and summarize the major points of the article into a one-page double spaced paper.
WEEK 10: Visit the homepage of the FBI and write a one-page reaction paper regarding the role of the FBI in counterespionage.
