COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to give students the basic understanding of the organization and management of various types of private clubs including city, country, and other recreational and social clubs. It will provide students with the unique sensitivities required in managing and operating the increasingly lucrative club management market.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
  1. Describe the nature and appeal of a private club, explain how private clubs are owned, and describe types of clubs.
  1. Explain the board of directors' role in a private club, describe the board's size and makeup, and summarize issues connected with board member tenure, selection, and orientation.
  1. Describe the role of service in private clubs, define "moments of truth," and summarize strategies for controlling service encounters.
  1. Summarize nonverbal, oral, and written communication skills club managers should possess.
  1. Explain how club managers can put together continuous-improvement teams at their clubs.
  1. List and describe the steps in a strategic planning process for clubs.
  1. Define "marketing research," describe types of marketing research and sources of marketing data, and explain the role of ethics in marketing.
  1. Summarize major U.S. anti-discrimination laws that affect clubs.
  1. Outline the organizational structure of club food and beverage operations.
  1. Explain how financial statements are used by clubs, list the major financial statements, and describe the Uniform System of Financial Reporting for Clubs.
  1. Identify the fundamental features and functions of email and the World Wide Web and describe Internet applications for clubs.
  1. List and describe golf facilities typically found at clubs.
  1. Identify and describe the major areas and pieces of equipment in a typical club fitness center and summarize how members use them.
  1. Describe typical tennis programs offered at clubs, and summarize the qualifications and duties of tennis staff positions

You will be emailing your weekly assignments, article reviews, research paper and final exam to me, at the designated e-mail address above. Submit these materials as attachments. I will acknowledge receipt of your materials in a return e-mail once I’ve successfully downloaded them. Please be sure your name and the course number appears in EVERY e-mail message you send –some email addresses make it impossible to determine the sender of the message.

ARTICLE REVIEW

You are required to review two (2) published articles pertaining to private clubs during week four (4). The review should contain the following information:
  1. The title of the article.
  2. Name of the publication.
  3. Article Date
  4. Brief summary of the article.
  5. State at least one thing you learned.
  6. It should be no more than one (1) to two (2) pages.
THE DETAILS OF YOUR RESEARCH PAPER
  1. The paper must be typewritten and contain at least five (5) pages and no more than seven (7) pages.
  2. Use double spaced 12 point Times New Roman font.
  3. It can be on any topic included in the textbook that interests you.
  4. The textbook cannot be used as a source.
  5. It can be in APA or MLA format.
Accurately document the sources used in your paper. Always give credit for material used from any source whether you paraphrase or directly quote. Both APA and MLA are acceptable reference styles. You should use a minimum of 5 sources.

A collegiate paper is expected to have no spelling errors, grammatical errors, or reference errors.

Papers are to be written in past tense and NOT IN FIRST OR SECOND PERSON. This means no “I feel” or “we believe” declarations are permitted. Remember that the paper should answer who, what, when and where to ensure the reader understands concepts, facts and assumptions related to the information. A professional research paper is well organized and comprehensive. Use headings to help organize information followed by supported topic sentences. Be concise, accurate, and factual.

STANDARDS OF CONDUCT

Canyon College and your instructor view plagiarism as a serious attack on academic standards and processes. It has no place in any curriculum. As such, evidence of plagiarism will result in “F” being assigned to the offending paper (and possibly to the entire course). Further academic action may also be taken.
