GENERAL COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is focused on the management of Casino Operations. During this course, students will learn about the history of the gaming industry and how it is rapidly growing throughout the United States. Upon exploring this course, the students will gain and learn to apply managerial skills utilizing gaming regulations, staffing resources, marketing strategies, accounting concepts, and much more.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand the history and development of gaming.
  2. Understand the structure of casinos and the importance of gaming licenses and adhering to state laws and regulations.
  3. Apply effective staffing, accounting, and marketing strategies for operating casino facilities.
  4. Identify and understand the various types of casino games that are offered in the gaming industry.
  5. Define and understand gaming terminology.
  6. Learn how to manage the casino environment.
TIME FRAME FOR THIS COURSE IS EIGHT (8) WEEKS

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

HT443 is a partially self-paced distance learning course offered through Canyon College. At the beginning of the course, each student is required to submit to the instructor via e-mail a short biography, which includes the following information:

The course grading criteria is as follows:

Weekly Assignments 25 points
Midterm 35 points
Final Exam 40 points

100-90 A
89-80 B
79-70 C
69-60 D
Below 60 F

COURSE ASSIGNMENTS

At the undergraduate level, students are expected to have an advanced writing style. All written assignments must be typed on a computer in an organized format of your choice as long as it is appropriate for the information being presented. Once each assignment is completed, please submit to my e-mail address: chat251@bellsouth.net

All Assignments are due each Saturday by midnight.

Reading Assignment:
Chapter 1: The History of Modern Gaming
Chapter 2: Gaming Control

Writing Assignment:
Select any casino and write a two-page history summary. Include the location, how it was started, types of games offered, etc.
Study terminology at end of text.

Week Two:
Reading Assignment:
Chapter 3: Gaming Taxes
Chapter 5: Currency Reporting
Chapter 6: Casino Cage, Credit and Collections

Writing Assignment:
Using the selected casino from week 1, report on the tax laws, regulations, and rates for the casino.
Using outside sources, give a brief summary on the Central Credit Agency.

Week Three:
Reading Assignment:
Chapter 4: Casino Management
Chapter 7: Slot Management

Writing Assignment:
Review an article related to casino management and write a 1-2 page summary on the article. Please submit actual article reviewed and citation.

Week Four:
Reading Assignment:
Chapter 8: Introduction to Table Games
Chapter 9: Table Game Operations

Midterm Examination (Chapters 1-9) Due Saturday by midnight.


Week Five:

Chapter 11: Mathematics of Casino Games

Writing Assignment:
Select an article regarding casino accounting and provide a 1-2 page summary.Please include the actual article.

Week Six:
Reading Assignment:
Chapter 12: Elements of an Effective Player Rating System
Chapter 13: Table Game Hold As A Management Tool

Writing Assignment:
Select two of the common casino games shown on page 197 in your text and write a brief description of the two games. Explain how each game is played and list all of the rules and score procedures.

Reading Assignment:
Chapter 14: Casino Marketing I
Chapter 15: Casino Marketing II

Writing Assignment:
Review an article related to casino marketing and write a 1-2 page summary. Please include actual article reviewed.

Week Eight:
Reading Assignment:
Chapter 16: Sports Book Operations
Chapter 17: Race Operations

Writing Assignment:
Select a sport and a race that can be used in betting. Write a 2-page summary on each detailing the event and how bets are placed on each. Outline any regulation requirements.

Final Examination (Chapters 10-17) Due Saturday by midnight.
