COURSE OVERVIEW:

I am happy to provide you with information and instructions regarding this course. As you know, you have a time limit to complete this course. The time limit follows the College's policy for course time completion.

This is an exciting course and I am sure you will learn some of the most interesting principles related to Professional Speaking. After successful completion of the course, you will have a much greater understanding of the issues in Professional Speaking that are applicable to journalism and communications. Also you will learn about some of the most current and pressing issues.

This course is an undergraduate level course. It is formatted to be self-directed, along with one-on-one mentoring by faculty. As your instructor, you and I communicate throughout your time spent in this important study. Communication can be by e-mail and fax.

As an undergraduate level course, you must be prepared to operationalize the concepts learned into the reality of today's environment of journalism and communications. The readings in the text will assist in meeting this broad-based goal.

You will find the textbooks for this course to be of the best available for the study of Professional Speaking by students of journalism and communications. It is packed with information.

Summary:

This course is an undergraduate course for students in the Online Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Communications Degree Program and who desire a concentration in Public Relations. This is an elective course that focuses on a general understanding of Professional Speaking. Some of the topics/ subjects covered include; small group communication, informative speaking, and speaking at special occasions.

Learning will provide students with the necessary foundation to progress toward graduation.

The course is formatted as an online course. There is a midterm and a final examination. Students are encouraged to submit questions, and discuss issues and problems with the instructor. Reading assignments from the textbooks are assigned. There may be weekly written responses to related questions, that are to be turned into the instructor.

EXAMINATIONS:

There are two examinations for this course. There is a mid-term and final examination. Both have an objective part, essay, and oral part. The examinations are "open" book. They thoroughly test knowledge in key areas of course content. While open book, they require thought and knowledge of the related content for successful completion.

Two parts of the examinations are taken "online." The oral part (speech) is to be mailed to your instructor. It may be mailed via the Internet (if you have this capability) or via regular mail. The examinations are accessed through the web site for Canyon College. When you are ready to take the examinations, please e-mail me at least 2 business days in advance and request authorization to take your exam. I will have sent to you an ID and password to access the examinations.

When you are ready to take the examinations, access the web site, and complete the examination. Access each exam only once. If you have difficulties, notify your instructor or the administration right away. You will receive your score from me in approximately two business days.

Please plan to take the midterm exam by the end of the "mid" week of the course. The final examination must be taken by the last day of the final week of the course.

GRADE ASSIGNMENT FOR EXAMINATIONS:

You will receive a letter grade, based on your over all score achievement. The grading scale is as follows:

90% - 100%
80% - 89%
70% - 79%
60% - 69%
Below 60%

You will receive a letter grade for each of the two examinations. Your final course grade will be an average of the scores you achieve on all examinations. The midterm counts as one exam and the final counts as one exam.

I will e-mail you your score and letter grade for each of the examinations.

READING AND WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS:

Your reading assignments are self-paced.

Please read from your textbook, "Communication for Business and the Professions."

After completion of the above, you may request to take the midterm exam.

After the midterm proceed to read "The Challenge of Effective Speaking."

After completion of your second textbook, you may request to take the final exam.

There may be assignments for speaking, reading, case studies, and research throughout the class time.

These assignments may be sent to you via e-mail.

REVIEW OF OBJECTIVES:

Be able to explain principles (if listed) in the beginning and in the summary of each chapter. Memorization is not necessary.

WHAT TO DO:
  1. Order your text books immediately.
  2. Review the objectives before reading and studying.
  3. When instructed, proceed to take the midterm examination
  4. When instructed, proceed to take the final examination
  5. During the first week of the course, please e-mail your instructor and provide your instructor with some basic information about you, including;
  1. your goals for this course
  2. your overall goals for a career in Journalism and Communications.
  3. your past and current work experiences
  4. any experiences you have had in Journalism and Communications.
  1. Contact your instructor any time you would like to discuss the readings, have questions, require clarifications or further explanations, etc.
  2. Share with your instructor current event issues related to Professional Speaking that you identify in the news media, etc. In turn, your instructor may share such information with you for discussion and analysis.
