Course Description:

This course involves a study of current theories and techniques on interpersonal, group and inter-group conflict related to constructive management of organizational conflicts and negotiations.

Learning Objectives:

In addition to the following broad objectives that guide the learning and demonstration of knowledge, specific individualized learning objectives can be developed.
  1. Valuation.
  2. To examine how the learner’s profession relates to and is influenced by conflict management from an integration of theoretical and applied perspectives.
  3. To understand the value of conflict resolution, principles of conflict management, and a resolution model for conflict.
  4. To understand the emotional aspects of conflict management and effective intervention in conflict management.
  5. The cost of capital, capital structure, dividend policy, and intermediate and long term financial planning.
  6. To apply to professional problems and issues an understanding of conflict management with a major emphasis placed on translating theory into real world practice and results.

Assessment:

Grades for PA549 will be determined by successful completion of the following:
  1. Eight reading and homework assignments covering each chapter in the text.
  2. Two case study reviews with written commentary by the student, as assigned by the instructor during weeks 3 and 4.
  3. One Essay Midterm Exam on a topic in the first part of the book.
  4. The development of a conflict case study with content approved by the instructor. This plan/project is due before the final exam will be given.
  5. One Essay Final Exam on a topic in the second part of the book.


Academic Requirements
  1. All students are expected to "attend" the course by completing all course assignments in an academic manner and with complete preparation.
  2. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and overall composition will be including in the grading of all assignments.
  3. Students are required to complete each unit within a one-week time frame. At the students request, and successful completion of a unit in less than one week, the instructor will provide students with subsequent units of homework in advance.
  4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.


Method of Instruction

PA549 is a distance learning course offered through Canyon College. Because this class is a partially self-paced program in that you may complete a specific weeks work at anytime during that week time-frame, it is essential that the student review all available materials located in the text, classroom, e-mail, and syllabus. Course examinations will be administered on-line during the fourth and eighth weeks of class. Prior to the submission of the first assignment each student is required to submit via e-mail to the instructor the following information:
