Course Description:

This course is designed on theoretical bases and strategies for adaptation through health promotion. This course will concentrate on nursing models and theories that support professional nursing practice. The student will analyze and synthesize various theoretical frameworks, developed by numerous nurse theorists. Application of the various theories will be explored, as well as the importance of the development and application of nursing theory to both clinical nursing practice and nursing research efforts will be incorporated into the students learning.

This course is a self-paced learning course. Course objectives are outlined below, as are the required text and other course requirements. Learners are expected to complete this course in a nine week time frame. Communication with the instructor can be completed through e-mail, US mail, telephone and fax. Students should feel free to contact the instructor at any time during the course for any assistance or guidance.

Course Objectives:
  1. Utilize critical thinking skills in the application of nursing theory to the practice of professional nursing and to the nursing process; within any clinical environment.
  2. To make application of nursing theory to the role of the professional nurse, as a care giver, an educator and a patient/family advocate.
  3. Compare and contrast various nursing theories while making application to professional nursing practice.
  4. To analyze how basic nursing research is applicable to nursing theory and nursing practice.

The Nursing Theory Paper will consist of a 5-10 page typed paper, which is to be double spaced and in APA format. The learner will choose a nursing theorist and explain how the specific theory can be applied to a specific area of clinical practice. (Example: If the learner works in critical care, pick a theorist and explain how this theory applies to the practice of critical care nursing). Students are to contact the instructor via e-mail, to obtain the mailing address, where the paper is be mailed. Papers should be mailed with a confirmation delivery to the instructor. Students should keep a copy of their paper for their records. Papers will not be returned unless requested by the student. Students who wish to have their papers returned must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with their paper, when mailing to the instructor for grading.

Format shall include the following:
  1. Introduction
  2. Description of the nursing theorist and the nursing theory
  3. Analysis of how the theory applies to a specific clinical practice area.
  4. Conclusion and Evaluation
The learner will be evaluated on the following:
  1. Use of APA format
  2. Grammar and spelling
  3. Content

Examination 1

The exam will consist of 50 questions including multiple choice, short answer and true/false. Exam 1 will cover Unit 1 (Analysis of Nursing Theories), Unit 2 (Philosophies), and Standards of Practice. When the student has completed the assigned reading and is then ready to take the examination, he/she is to contact the instructor via e-mail. The instructor will notify the college and the student will be allowed access to the testing area. Once the student has gained access to the examination, the student has 3 hours to complete the examination. Books may be used during the examination.

Examination 2

This exam will consist of three essay question Conceptual Models: Grand Theories, and Middle Range Nursing Theories. When students are ready to take Exam #2, they are to contact the instructor, who will grant them access to the examination site. Once the student has gained access to the examination, the learner has 3 hours to complete the examination. Books may be used during the examination.
