COURSE OVERVIEW:
I am happy to welcome you and provide you with the information and instructions regarding this course. You have 10 weeks to finish this course.

This course will cover terminology used within the health care field and is a prerequisite for all non-health care providers entering the ND program.

This is a doctorate level course and is credited for 2 semester hours. It is formatted to be self-directed, along with one-on-one mentoring by faculty. As your instructor, we will be communicating throughout the duration of this course. You may contact me by email, fax, phone or mail.

The text for this course is an excellent book. It contains case studies, practice tests and exams along with the course material. You will find it not only an excellent textbook but also a valuable reference book.

Summary: This course is a doctorate level course for students in the ND program. The text, along with the course, is designed to give you a basic construction of medical words. In part one you will learn terminology, including word parts, prefixes, suffixes and root words. Part two focuses on body systems. You will study each particular system along with a brief outline of anatomy and physiology and the pathophysiology. This will include terms describing diseases and disorders and related surgical, diagnostic, and treatment terms.

Course objectives will include: It is recommended that you purchase a good medical dictionary.

The course is formatted as an online course. There is a midterm and a final examination. The final is not a comprehensive exam. There will be weekly reading assignments. You are encouraged to submit any questions and/or problems with the instructor. You must take the midterm exam no later than the end of the 5th week in the course. You must take the final exam no later than the end of the 10th week.

Your Instructor: Catherine A. Moran, B.S., MS.Ed. - holds a Bachelor's degree in Science and Speech Pathology from Kent State University, a Master's Degree in Education from Breyer State University, and a Doctor's Degree in Education from Breyer State University. She has held positions as a medical technologist and laboratory technician in acute care facilities. She is the founder and President of a national home school organization. She specializes in one-on-one work with learning disabled students and has a private practice in this area of education. She is certified in scotopic assessments for children and adults. She has studied health sciences at the post-graduate level and remains active in teaching and promoting natural health care modalities.

EXAMINATIONS: There are two examinations for this course. There is a midterm and a final examination. Both examinations are objective type and are "open" book with some time constraints. They will thoroughly test knowledge in key areas of course content. Both examinations are taken "online." You may access the examinations via the classroom for this course. The examinations are accessed through the website for Canyon College. When you are ready to take the examinations please email me directly (katie@canyoncollege.edu) and ask for authorization to take your exam. I will in turn notify the College that you may have exam access. You will receive an email notice from the College's administrative offices that you are permitted to have access to the examination.

When you are ready to take the examinations, access the website, and take the examination. The examinations are graded after completion and you will be notified almost immediately of your score. Please plan on taking the midterm after finishing the first 16 chapters of the text. The final examination must be taken by the last day of the final week of the course.

GRADE ASSIGNMENT FOR EXAMINATIONS:

You will receive a letter grade based on your over all score achievement. The grading scale is as follows:

90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C
60 - 69% = D
Below 60% = F

You will receive a letter grade for each examination. Your final course grade will be a computer average of the scores you achieve on both examinations.
