Dual Diagnosis: An integrated approach to treatment. 2001. Watkins, T., Lewellen, A., Barrett, M. ISBN #: 0761915583

Course Overview:

This course provides an overview of mental health problems and substance abuse. Utilizing an integrative model, it includes theory, research, and techniques from the substance abuse and general mental health fields. It includes diagnostic categories, and illuminates them with treatment methods tailored for specific mental health problems and substance abuse. In a practical manner, each disorder is presented with assessment procedures, prioritized treatment goals, and a detailed treatment model. Also presented is a grid showing the relationships between certain disorders and the processes of change which have been shown or theorized to be particularly helpful in their treatment.

Course Requirements:

This is a "contract for grade" course in which you determine how much you want to complete for a specific grade, as follows: (Note: At the doctoral level, grades below a B are not considered.)

For a "B":
  1. Write a 2-3 page reaction paper for each chapter 1-10. This should contain your thoughts about the information presented, not just a summary of the chapter. What did you learn?
  2. Complete an essay-type final exam, achieving at least 80% or better. See the grade of “A” for details on the final.
For an "A": Complete the above, plus....
  1. Interview a practicing counselor, social worker, psychologist or doctor, and write it up in 3-5 pages.
  2. Complete an essay final exam, achieving at least 90%:
Final Exam: Write 3-5 paragraphs about the 5 most important points you learned in this course AND 1-2 paragraphs about 5 secondary points that were significant.
All work is to be e-mailed to the instructor when complete work is completed at the above address. Please place your work in the body of the email, not as an attachment. Please advise your instructor when you are ready to write the final.

For those not achieving the required percentage on the final to satisfy the grade contracted for, a "minus" grade will be awarded. For example, if you contract for a "B" but only score 75% on the final, you will receive a B- as your final grade.

Please email the grade you wish to contract for in your first reaction paper for chapter 1. This contract can be changed if you desire to do so at a later time.

If you have questions, please feel free to email your instructor at any time. Email is answered nearly every day with the exception of vacation time, which you will be notified about.
