Course Overview:
This is three-semester hour course designed to be completed in ten weeks. As soon as you receive your textbooks you may begin your course of study. There are no prerequisite course requirements for this course.
Introduction:
Welcome to "Naturopathic First Aid", a required course for the Doctor of Naturopathy Degree in the School of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Care at Canyon College. This course is designed to give you information and practical hands-on experience in the area of first aid. Course content includes prevention, victim assessment, basic life support for life threatening emergencies, standard protocols and natural treatment options for injuries, managing trauma and medical emergencies, rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Students will be required to obtain certification in First Aid and CPR from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the National Safety Council, or equivalent certification.

- Identify emergency situations and know how to activate the chain of survival.
- Be able to complete a victim assessment and know appropriate protocols for treatment.
- Apply basic life support for both trauma and medical emergencies.
- Build a "natural first aid kit."
- Demonstrate skill areas for application of first aid, artificial breathing, CPR, and use of AED.

Students are required to obtain their own textbooks and are encouraged to acquire the texts as soon as possible in order to have the required reading completed as to complete the course project on time.
Examinations:
In addition to one exam, proficiency will be demonstrated by providing proof of First Aid/CPR course completion and certification. Students are required to provide proof of completion/certification in First Aid and CPR (including Infant, Child, One and Two Rescuer Adult CPR, and AED) from the American Red Cross, the American Heart Association, the National Safety Council, or equivalent certification, by the end of this 10 week course. In addition to the written and "hands-on" testing required for the First Aid and CPR course, there is one written exam to be completed online via the Canyon College web site. The exam for this course is programmed and located in the "classroom" for this course. To access the exams you must send me a message at nmdphd@canyoncollege.edu and request to have access to the examination. Once you have been authorized access to the exam you will be contacted via e-mail. You then need to proceed to the classroom, click on testing, and click on the exam you are taking. You will need your User ID and Password to access the exam. After you have completed the examination it will be graded and you will be notified almost immediately of your score. The Final Exam must be completed by the end of Week 10.
Grading:
Your final course grade will be determined by providing proof of First Aid/CPR certification, your final examination grade and evaluation of your Course Project.
The grading scale is:
90 - 100%
  = A
80 - 89%
  = B
70 - 79%
  = C
69% and below
  = Fail
A passing score of 70% is required.
